NM applications

Well become a pain to nmdow and ask them to do away with outfitter set aside and make it a 90-10 split
I’m not convinced that putting applicants who currently apply for 16% of the tags into a pool with 10% is gonna help me very much. Besides, New Mexico BHA needs something to whine about and they’re running out of topics.

The math with the current outfitter pool applicants added to the current NR pool applicants spread over 10% does improve draw odds slightly for those of us currently in the 6% pool, but not by a huge margin, and likely not for the long term. The nice thing would be a few of the tags that New Mexico BHA took from NR’s and then gave to no one(their rounding rule change literally just eliminated a few tags, but did nothing for residents at all) would become available to me again.

A change that would help us ALL, residents and non-residents alike, would be to record whether or not you applied in the draw, and if you did, you became ineligible for any private land or OTC permits for that species during that hunting season. A ton of guys plan to hunt private, and apply in the draw to see if they can hunt public in the same unit, or sometimes a better unit. Make them choose. That would boost draw odds substantially. The current system does not use private land or private tags to take pressure off of public demand. Let people hunt private. Let landowners sell access and vouchers. But use that private land to take pressure off of public demand by keeping those hunters out of the draw.
