I have a simular experiance in NM as you. I hunted a gila unit first rifle, WAY over rated! Made a comment to a buddy that I still stand by; i would rather have a wyoming general than a Gila tag. I do think there are a couple good hunts just the odds are so long to draw them. Deer, I have hunted low quality units last 2 years, scouting and seeing new country i have always wanted to explore. Unimpressed with the hunt itself but I enjoy seeing new/different country so it's worth that. The license cost and application fees vs likelihood of drawing is about at my maximum, but for now it still gets applied for. I seriously thought to myself this year maybe I would be better just to buy 2 commissioner raffle tickets here it's basically better odds, but my #3 deer choice has some unexplored mountains i want to hike. Good luck to all in drawive drawn n m deer twice and elk once in last 10 years, overall not bad for 6% diy n r odds, always my 3rd choice,,never 2nd or 1st,,ive hunted 2 b for deer twice and was not very impressed,,personally its semi- marginal at best for deer for being supposedly one of the top units.i think it has gone downhill since colorado put many miles of fence in to the north of that hindering the migration i feel.
Dry every wherehow has the moisture been in n m this winter?sounds like it's been pretty dry,,still will be tryin for deer and elk,,,anybody out there with recommendations on "s" tag deer and elk options as 3rd choices,,late muzz elk?rifle deer options on the "s" price,im leaning towards a few options,,always open to recommendations
Good to hear. Tag numbers have been too high in those places if they really want them to be trophy quality units.Listening to game and fish sounds like they are cutting gila elk herd tags, cutting 2b tags, idiots trying to increase oryx tags but public comment has pushed hard against that since everyone saw what happened with ibex. Hopefully cutting the doe deer hunts around here as well.
I can see NR deer slowing down, but after watching other states increase costs and volumes still increasing, I’m just not so sure.My prediction: 2025 was peak NM application volume.
Costs up, opportunity down. I’m cutting back on applications for my kids, we have much better odds of drawing and having a good hunt in Colorado.
I still love NM and i will put in, but the days of floating them a 15k loan across several family members may be over.
Oh I just got a nice surprise. I had thought my foreign national wife was not eligible for SS spousal benefits. But was informed today that was incorrect. After filing for myself in January, I subsequently double checked and found she meets just enough guidelines, so at her age 63.5, we will get another 37.5% = $1,200/month! But she gave me a cold look when I told her my idea of opening a new hunting tag bank account to direct deposit those checks into. I don't get it. Seems like a very practical idea. Either way it's a great day for us. Will definitely do the oryx now.Income took a big hit this year. Only income will be a large Social Security check + 4% IRA withdrawals so will not apply for as many species this year. Probably just elk, deer & Oryx. Will be interesting what I'll have the funds for going forward. I guess that's the good part about all the red boxes. lol
Good point on deer, they’ll be disappointed if apps don’t decrease, indicating they left money on the tableI can see NR deer slowing down, but after watching other states increase costs and volumes still increasing, I’m just not so sure.
I wouldn’t be upset it numbers went down!![]()
