Has anyone heard of this outfit?

Cabela's Inc. announced today that it will build a 75,000-square-foot store in Grand Junction, the Nebraska-based outfitter's first retail outlet in Colorado.

Work on the store, which will anchor the south end of Mesa Mall at U.S. highways 6 and 50, is expected to begin in early November with the opening in early summer 2010.

"Colorado's Western Slope is a prime location for a variety of outdoor activities, including world-class hunting and fishing, and Grand Junction is the gateway to everything Colorado offers," said Tommy Millner, Cabela's chief executive officer.

The building's exterior will reflect Cabela's traditional store model, while the inside will include a gun library, conservation-themed wildlife displays, trophy animal mounts and gear and clothing for outdoor sports and activities.

Can't believe it's the first one in Colorado. You would think that would be one of the first places you would expand to. Heck we have one in podunk Wheelling, WV.

don't think they sell $300 customs, do they?

8 havalons?

Seriously, I can spend hours hours in the Ft. Worth Cabelas just droppin' in for a box of ammo.

We used to Drive to Sidney to go to that one... then one came to Utah, then Boise.

Don't buy much there... but love going !!!

Man, we are spoiled here having 3 in MN. I have 2 within and hour of my house. I can spend hours there just killin time...much to the dismay of my wife.

I have one about 17 minutes away. I go there once in a while and it is handy but I usually buy someplace else due to prices

Good to see a real estate broker making it in todays market. Damn you Terry, to just had to push my buttons.:D

Oak,

I heard it was coming but didn't really believe it. They said it was going to be put in one of the department stores- and I didn't figure that because Cabelas is huge. We'll see what happens between Cabelas, Sportsmans Warehouse, and other local businesses. When Sportsmans came, they nearly shut down Gene Taylor's (too bad, I liked that place). Hope they don't overshadow any other local businesses like Red Rock Archery (but they have a lot of faithful consumers).

Moosie, I used to go there all the time in college (Greeley, CO) but now it's just too damn far... I bet your drive would put mine to shame.

like others have said, its can be fun to go and check everything out, I've got a 2 1/2 hour drive to the closest one and still make it a couple times a year whenever I have an excuse to be in the Cda/Spokane area. Prices aren't the best on all things but you can get stuff that is harder to find at smaller retailers.

Yeah, I know, I know. About the only thing I buy from them any more is Microtex. If I could find something similarly priced that is just as good, I could dump them.

Yeah, Gene Taylor's has been disappointing since SW came to town. I still take them my business when they have what I want. Had some gun work done recently there. I don't think that RRA will be affected much, but GT and even SW are probably sweating a bit right now. Cabelas is going to be where Mervyns used to be, so it will be a much smaller store.

The mounts and displays are worth the trip. In the last few years we have gotten a Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops and Scheels here in the Omaha area...all I can say is...save your pennies cuz like it or not, when they are that close...you're gonna end up there...a lot...like a moth to a flame!...lol.

Speaking of sporting goods stores, I was in Great Falls yesterday and picked up a few items at Scheels. Hard not to laugh at some of the shoppers yesterday. Dude, you are shopping, you don't need to wear your orange vest in the store or be head to toe camo. We get it, you are a huntter. Usually they travel in groups of 3 or 4 and stop at every item and discuss it based on the experts they are not. I think many of them are lost since they should be shopping in the physical fittness section of the store.

The other day I had some "hunters" stop in the office looking for directions to where they could find a big buck. I noticed they had a nice trailer with several quads tied on, but could not see the plates. I asked where they were from and they said Kalispell. I am guessing, based on the accent, they were not natives. Anyway, since they had on their orange as they entered the office, I asked them if they had any luck. Apparently not, they just pulled into town. This made we curious at what point had they decided it was time to don the fancy colors?

Anyway, I am at the office, so I play nicely. Where should we go? I give them a few ideas and they want to trump them all with other places they have heard are much better. I give them maps for those specific area and wish them luck, knowing they will find many more grouse than mule deer. I love the folks that become experts as soon as the put on the uniform.:D

The camo crowd and blaze orange folks are everywhere!!!! Nothing sticks out more than a dark camo pattern with a blaze orange vest crawling through the Sage Brush after antelope. I do wear camo at times but just when it's called for and then appropriate to the terrain, trees, shrubs, etc where I am hunting. I do understand stopping in for licenses and gear on a trip but I suspect it's far more than that nowadays as it weems to have become a serious fashion statement.

No Cabelas around here, but a Bass Pro about an hour away. Sportsman's Warehouse shut down after just a couple months out in Victorville and moved to Visalia. We stopped at Bass Pro in Vegas on our way back from Utah, but didn't spend any $$$.

Miller, I hear you on that one. The Wal-Mart in Gillette was hilarious late September. It cracked me up as I would drive past the walk in area and counted the hunters on opening week. It was ridiculous, I drove south to the public land that was on every BLM map at the said Wal-Mart and the sporting goods stores. The guys rubber necking to check out the deer I got as well as my girl's was hilarious.

I had a couple guys from LA ask me where I shot my elk this year. I told them I was sorry "I work too hard to tell everybody where I get my elk. The were disappointed, but I just can't figure why you won't do your homework if you plan on dropping that much on Non-Resident tags.
