New minimum sentences for Chicago gun crimes

The Chicago mayor has proposed new minimum sentences for gun crimes... "what a brilliant idea". Finally a liberal (progressive as they like to be called) sees the light. Do not punish "us" who obey the law, punish those that do NOT obey the laws.

By the way I can already see it coming, the excuse... our prisons are already overcrowed.

This is a bad idea, and will result in citizens pleading guilty to lesser but still serious offences they did not commit, in order to avoid the risk of a 30 year sentence. Mandatory minimums are one reason that over 90% of federal cases are settled before trial.

The prosecutor will generally have discretion as to what the charges are. The bad guys will plead guilty to aggravated assault and have the gun charges dropped.

I spent 30 years in New Jersey - you would be amazed at what is a felony in those states.

I listen to some liberal talk shows [ keeping an eye on the enemy:hump:] they blame the violence in Chicago on the lack of strong gun laws in states that border them ,....They say the criminals go to those states to get guns .. Idiot libs always place blame everywhere but on the responsible party...

I wonder what country they will blame if we had a national ban. Do they have any clue what I can buy on the internet if I wanted to. Maybe we should just adopt China's laws on internet use also.

They will not listen to reason there. I wonder where they are going to put all of these new violators? It will do no good as long as they permit a society full of people with no morals that are all on the government dole. It breeds insanity, family destruction and violence. There are areas now where the police will not even go. Great city, huh?

The Governor of Illinois just closed (I think) 3 prisons. Not sure where they will lock up new inmates - they have medium and low security prisoners sleeping in bunks in the gyms. Only violent and maximum security inmates are truly secured.

CIL, yep, he shut down 3 prisons. one of them was the maximum security down here. most of the ones from the closed places are going to joliet.
