New #2 (weight) NC Bear Killed

North Carolina may be lacking in the whitetail department, but we have some whopper coastal bears. Last month, a hunter killed the new #2 NC bear, which weighed 782 lbs. That only lasted a couple weeks. Here's the story of a 16 year old beating that one by 2 lbs.

The #1 bear by weight is 880 lbs, which was also shot in NC.

That's cool. How strict are they on bear hunting down there? I'd love to get a bear someday.

A NC bear license is OTC. The state is divided into the Costal and Mountain regions, with countes assigned specific seasons and harvet stastics about equal.

Th Mountain region has an abundance of public land, but the coast is a lot more limited. Hyde county (coastal) is pretty much private land and extremely swampy.

One main reason the bears are so big at the coast is because you have enormous agricultural fields next to swamps that go for miles. Some of the swamps are so thick, you have to see it to believe it. It's like a wall. I have no idea how the bear live in the mess!

Wow that's interesting. They try to take 20 bears off a 7,500 acre place each year. Must be plenty around and good location with the wildlife refuge adjoining.
