Im looking at ordering a 1874 Sharps: Big Timber. For hunting Deer. Would appreciate your recommendations. Cartridge. Model #. Barrel configuration

If you are like me and don’t want to use blackpowder, go with 45-70. I have been looking at ordering one myself. I will probably end up with a Hartford model with a 30” barrel and a few upgrades.

Weight is a big factor for me. I saw a 40-70 on gunbroker yesterday. It had a 30” heavy half. It looked like the number #1 Sporter in like new condition with vernier sights for $3500. However its weight is 10 lbs 14 oz. Im wanting a hiking hunting rifle Im considering a 26-28” standard octagon. Im going to have to call Sharps and ask what the weight difference might be. You can reload using 5744 powder. I shot a 45-70 once with the high pressure load and it had sever recoil. The wait time is at 24 months. Have you heard any difference
