I'll be elk hunting in Montana this Sept.Wondering if anyone has good pictures of the terrain in the Big/Little Belts,Crazy's or Castle Mountain ranges.Want to get a look for what I'm in for.I'm in pretty good shape but need to start training my legs harder.Maybe some pictures will motivate me.Works been crazy lately, and I don't get many days off, which is the problem
Hopefully one of you guys can help me out with some pictures
Thanks

Only been in the Belts a few times and never in the Castles, but here's some pretty typical Crazy terrain.

md-nice pics of Crazy peak, hiked that ridge years ago to the summit. There was a well known Native American who hiked Crazy Peak at 12 yrs old for his vision quest, pretty impressive. There was elk sign up in this basin last summer during a summit hike in the Crazies.

After pictures of the Crazy's, the Belts and Castles aren't going to look too amazing. Nice photos.

very nice.I see what you mean snowy mountaineer.I have a few spots picked out in all those mountain ranges.with limited time, I'll have to be mobile unless I get lucky and run into elk right away. Those pictures were great.Definitely need more leg training to hunt the Crazies. The spots I've found there are at least 4 mile hike
Every biologist tells me the elk populations are too high in all those mountain ranges;or record highs.would you guys that go there say thats true??
If anyone has some more pics,I'd love to see them

There's lots of elk for sure Mixed... prob is, a LOT of them are holed up on private right off the forest with little to no availability to access, which is WHY FWP cant get the heard "down" to objective. however, dont let that discourage you, there are still PLENTY of elk on public in all those units. I say that, but even having all season I usually have a tough time killing one... but its still fun as heck trying! By the way, those pics are great and very representative... The Castles will look like a combo of the Crazy and Belt pics... Not Near as much big rocky above timber line stuff, but steeper and deeper than the Lil belts for sure.

Mixedbag - I'm doing a bivy this year in SW MT and this motivated the S$%T out of me. I'm pumped now for sure. I just want to go for run right now, but I need a day off so I'll just shoot today. Only 2 months! Booyaaaa!

All the pics are great.Hit the gym this morning before work.I was actually better off then when I started last year.A few miles on the stepper and treadmill and I felt great.I have to at least double what I'm doing now,but I'm pretty happy where I was able to start. My work keeps me in good shape, but my legs need the endurance built up
When I'm hunting, I won't have to wonder whats over the next hill.Learned the hard way in Co. a few years back that my work wasn't enough training for an elk hunt. That won't ever happen again!!!
Thanks again for all the pictures.I just wish I could move my business out there. You guys have an awesome place to live
