My Lucky Year!

Ok an update…
I went over to the unit today. Did some glassing from the highway and hiked a couple miles up a ridge and glassed some more between snow squalls. Didn’t see a single sheep! Couple muleys and possibly a bull elk..

2 weeks ago I did see 4 rams. They were a good 2 miles (as crow flies) and 3600’ up. From what I could tell there weren’t any real big ones so I didn’t go after em…
I’m hoping for some snow! And waiting another week or so before I get real serious about it.

How long does your season go?

I have been doing some hunting around home for deer and elk, as well as helping the family out here and there. My wife hadn’t shot a deer in a few years so we went on a road hunt one evening. We’ve discovered that’s about all you can do with a 2 year old haha! Found some does on some public not to far off the road. Parked the truck out of sight and started a stalk when I look up and here were about half a dozen does trotting towards us! I got the gun set up while Rebekah held the kiddo then we switched positions. The deer ended up feeding in to about 150 yds and she shot the biggest doe! It was very windy which I think helped hide us a bit because there wasn’t to much stealthiness going on lol!
Nikki did real good though and hardly made a peep.
She loved touching the deer and when we came home she said,
“Mom that was so fun”.. proud dad moment for sure!
And now one of her favorite bedtime stories is the ‘deer story’. Im thinking it’s about time for her first bow?? 😂

Looks like you’re having the season of seasons. Enjoy the ride and good luck finding a good ram. Next week should be great. Hopefully you’ll hear some head butting and find a big one.

Time to finish the story!
I made the trip over a couple times to look for sheep from a couple vantage points close to the highway but didn’t get real serious until this past week..
I had planned to be hunting on Monday morning (17th) but the sudden death of an older friend and pastor from church the week before, made me delay getting to camp before Monday evening.

I pulled my Dads camper over and we had a comfortable camp with heat and a bed all week! My cousin and friend (Norman) who I’ve had some great hunts with over the years decided to spend a couple days with me before he planned on going on East to hunt deer.

We went to bed with a plan for getting up and glassing in the morning. We got up and glassed from the highway and soon spotted a ram that a local guy had told me about. Looked to be a decent 6 year old but was pretty far away and not something we wanted to pursue just yet. We spent the day driving and glassing from different vantage points from the road. We spotted more sheep way up and it soon became apparent that with the lack of snow the sheep were still mostly at 8-10k feet!

That evening my bro Eric showed up at camp. I was in contact with a couple local guys throughout the week as well. They were an absolute wealth of knowledge and one dude was actively looking for a ram for me as well! I can’t thank these guys enough- you know who you are… it helped a ton being able to get input and bounce ideas off of these 2 individuals throughout the week.

On Wednesday the 3 of us did much of the same- drive around and do some long range glassing. We saw decent numbers of sheep but all a long ways off and way up high. IMG_9154.jpeg
Nothing like glassing from the comfort of a parking lot in town 😂

Most of the rams we were seeing were rutting hard and saw a couple decent ones but nothing we were ready to go after just yet.

Norman made the decision to ditch the deer hunt to stay and hunt sheep which was awesome! The extra set of eyes helped a lot, along with the jokes that were cracked to keep us all in good spirits lol!

On Thursday we decided to get up early and go for a hike. We left the trailhead at 5:30 AM and began the 3.5 mile trek to the first spot we could really see well.

We got there at first light and almost immediately started seeing sheep. Rams were chasing ewes all over the place! Most of them were 500- 1500’ above the trail yet. We made our way on up the trail and kept seeing sheep throughout the day. Just nothing I was quite ready to pull the trigger on yet.

Lots of glassing!

Anyone recognize this ram from earlier in this thread?! Check out his gut situation. It didn’t seem to affect him to much and he was chasing that ewe as hard as ever! This was approximately 7 miles as the crow flies from where I had seen him in September, which gave us some good insight on how much these things can move.
Norman gave this ram the name of Hernia Ernie lol. Throughout the week we were looking for Full Curl Earl but after a few days we started looking for Down Low Joe.. 😂

I have lots of digiscope footage but most of the pics aren’t great.
Also saw 2 collared sheep which was neat. Small ram and a ewe.
Had a great day overall and hiked out in the dark.

Friday we decided to split up. Eric and I hiked into a different spot to get a long look at a different mountain, and Norman covered some of the glassing points from the road. We all saw a few more rams but all far away and the 2 that looked pretty nice were moving fast chasing a ewe. To far away to make a play to get a better look.

Back at camp.

Some of you may remember I had mentioned that my wife’s grandmother had cancer for the second time and the family was expecting she would pass away sooner rather than later.
This was a special grandma and I knew I needed to be there for my wife and her family when the time came for the funeral. Throughout the week I knew that hospice didn’t think she would live to much longer but I was trying not to think about it too much and just enjoy my time out there! - And was trying to accept that whatever the good Lord had in mind for me was ok. All in Gods perfect time!

That’s a good moose and kickass you got him with your bow. Very cool of the landowners too! And a dang nice whitey for the young man??? Too cool! Big congrats to you both.

Saturday morning we made the 3.5 mile hike back in to where we had been on Thursday.
At first light we started glassing but didn’t see much for a while.
Finally we saw a ewe and ram up in the rocks and trees. They were up high and moved over a spine in the ridge pretty quickly.
A little bit later (at @800 yds) a ewe came bombing over a rock face way lower down followed by a decent ram. That quick another ewe and bigger ram came popping out of the bottom! There was a bit of chaos on the rock face but before we could really size him up they disappeared behind some trees.
We watched for awhile and nothing came out up top so we decided to move on up the trail to see if we could get a better look.
We kept moving, glass, stop, look, repeat but never did turn them up again.

By this time it was about 10:00 AM and I got a text on Zoleo from my wife- Grandma had died, funeral on Tuesday.- Wow how awesome is this?!

Oh well, I told her to go ahead and get me a ticket to fly in Sunday and back Tuesday evening. I would still have Wednesday- Sunday to hunt, plus it was finally supposed to start snowing next week.
We sat and glassed for awhile but didn’t see much so we split up for a bit to cover a little more ground and get some different angles to glass from. It was a beautiful day!

Enjoyed some warm Peak meals. IMG_9367.jpeg
Watched a goat.

I’m just invested in this now… wish we were buddies, I need something to do tomorrow, I have a pile of Swaro glass, a short drive away and a grumpy attitude as always 🤷🏻‍♂️
