MT- M/S/G results 26

I honestly dont remember the odds back then. I put in for that unit because it seemed like a pretty good chance. Fewer applicants, more tags.
Haven't drawn since.
Things have changed.

I should have paid more attention when I was a kid here in Montana. I was happy to go kill a deer and an elk. The big 3 got my attention later. mtmuley

Moose tags 2006 610 vs 2026 312.

Sheep tags 2006 332 vs 2026 105.

Goat tags 2006 293 vs 180.

Fwp erases the data before that.

Pretty interesting trends and not surprising people aren’t drawing when you increase demand. Hopefully the trends change.
That's pretty sad to see. It sure would be nice to see a change in this, even though I'm not so sure we ever will.

Granted this was back in 1990, ...first year I put in for a moose tag I drew a tag for Sage creek area, Gallatin Canyon. I think the odds were better back then.

That is a big part of the problem. In 1990 they gave out 55 moose licenses in unit 323, this year it's 10.

Fast cars, fast women...at 20-23 years old normal guys are thinking through certain anatomy.😁

Those are the numbers that made me figure the odds had to of gotten worse coupled with no money to apply

Im just glad I don’t have a big itch to hunt one of those or I’d probably be refinancing a paid off truck and putting my money down before things get worse

I remember people forgetting to apply. I don't see how that could happen now.

People would also apply inconsistently, I have done it myself, I am sure that is rare today.
The first 25 years I applied I drew 2 moose, (1 was a cow) and 3 goat tags. Ending about 2000.
I have never been consistent applying for sheep. I would rather hunt deer. I have hunted the unlimited districts a few times but I just can't take sheep hunting seriously. The glass till your eyes bleed thing... I just can't find the enjoyment in it.

I unfortunately didn't start applying for sheep and goat until I was 20. Fortunately my dad sacrificed the 70 bucks up front for the whole family to apply for moose. I drew the worst tag(IMO) in the state with 12 points back in 2020. I am very thankful for the opportunity to actually hunt moose in my home state but wish the opportunity was better.

I also think MT should go 50% tag cost up front I think this may help odds but to be honest i have no clue. I think its a shame that it takes 30 or 40 years for people to draw and then not be able to put their all into a hunt.

I have very mixed feeling on the money up front thing. I hate to see someone who would hunt it not get an application in due to it. I also hate seeing guys apply their wife’s grandma for it because it doesn’t cost anything

The up front costs years ago were nothing. I struggled some years but applied. Besides, it was refunded. Need to go back to those days. mtmuley

We used to front $25 when that was over 25 gallons of gas, it was over 3 hours pay. Anyone who couldn't apply couldn't afford to hunt. This isn't a cow elk/doe whitetail hunt we are talking about. WE would choose which species was our priority. If you missed a year, it didn't matter because you weren't being bent over by points for the rest of your life.

The tag cost is less than a tank of fuel these days. If they can’t front the cost they probably can’t afford more than a day or two of hunting.

I did to at one point I’d just hate to see a 12-13 year old get left out with low odds so the dad didn’t wanna put the money up. Like I said it’s mixed feeling for me

One good part about the Big 3 in MT is that we get to hunt for three months. If you so desire and your calendar allows, you can get a lot out of that tag. A few other states have long seasons, also. Yet I don't think any other states have the 3 month MT has, other than some of the ID moose seasons. The Big 3 are much shorter seasons in most states.

I think we should be required to front the money on those three species. If for youth we had a lower fee, I'd be fine with that. At low point levels and fewer numbers, youth aren't going to impact the odds much in a system of squared points with thousands of people sitting on 25+.
