I have been on the Montana web site several times in the past six months and all the licenses are still confusing. I see that there are plenty of deer licenses available, but is that tag good for any area that doesn't have a draw or are there region specific tags. Any clarification would be great for this college educated moron who can't figure out there license system. And some people thought the Wisconsin regulations were confusing!

If you purchase a NR deer license now, it is only good for units that do not require a permit as the drawings for deer permits have concluded. But, a whole bunch of Montana is still available for you to hunt. mtmuley

In short. You can shoot a whitetail in any hunting district with that licenses. You can shoot a mule deer in any district that does not have a special drawing for mule deer buck tags. Most of the state is open to deer hunting with that license.

Not quite, Beartooth WMA requires the special tag for whitetail as well ;)
