I have a question about Montana Draw System.

I am trying to unravel MT draw system. I watched Randy’s YouTube video. I want to plan a hunt for 2027 based on my schedule, but I don’t want to end up in the 1 point sandwich.

What would you recommend to have the best odds of drawing in 2027?

1. Can I buy a point this year (2026), then buy a point when I apply in 2027 as well, so I can enter with 2 points?

OR

Am I only allowed to buy a point this year (2026), which means I shouldn’t buy a point so I enter with 0 points in 2027?

Am I missing something? Any other suggestions on how to best position myself to hunt MT in 2027?

Wait until July of this year and buy a preference point and a bonus point. Then in March of 2027 purchase another preference point and another bonus point. That would give you 2 total preference points which would give you about a 80-90% chance of being drawn for a General Elk License. The bonus point are for chances to get in a permit area where the higher populated areas are.
