Metalworking Hunttalkers!

"One man's junk is another man's treasure". I'll bet that trailer will serve you well. You might consider a couple swing away jacks for the tail end if you're going to load over the back.

Yeah thats a good idea. I just used a jack stand this time. Thats actually a friend's tractor, not something I'll regularly be hauling. I really dont have any need for 6k lb capacity except maybe dirt or gravel, but if I was going to order and axle and have to pay freight, I figured go big or go home.

Well I got a call yesterday from a buddy who works at a transmission shop. They had a clutch drum with a cracked weld and the replacement part from GM was unusable due to a bad weld (looked like the robot didn't have any argon). So he asked if I could take care of it. Did that this morning and then picked up some material for my son's birthday present, a swingset. Going to be working on that tomorrow with this very professional setup.20251219_091247.jpg20251219_121037.jpg20251219_131414.jpg

Took a risk on the weather with some fast setting concrete and it did not work well at all. I dont think itll matter until I can address it for a long term solution though. Anyway, here's the result after day 1 of welding stuff up. Still have the platform for the slide to build and some gussets to add but its coming along well. 20251222_142556.jpg20251222_150854.jpg20251222_154703.jpg

Scrap deer feeder legs, couple old drop hitches, old deer rack, some galvanized tubing and a couple lawnmower blades later....

Finished product. Couldn’t be happier. This will free up a bunch of space for us. I'll give it a test run this weekend.

Got a season using this setup and I'll have to say we really liked this setup. I'm actually surprised nobody sells these.

My 10 year old and I decided to learn to make knives together. We started out buying pre-finished blanks and adding handles. For Christmas/ his birthday we got a basic blacksmithing setup with a forge so we can heat treat blades. We got some solid stock bar and ground our blades out of our own design, heat treated and then added handles after finish grinding. After a few more of these, we are going to start forging out the blades from solid stock steel. It has been a fun journey so far (and now my recent foray into leatherwork has a purpose making sheaths). So far a fun and rewarding hobby (with a ton yet to learn).

Metal you say? I can do that.

Got a call from the friend who has me weld the transmission drums asking if I could build him a couple carts similar to what they have in the shop but improved for their purposes. Drew it up and got the green light so I'll go pick up material today and hopefully get them built and delivered next week. Nice to sketch some stuff out again. 20260220_083731.jpg

While on the welding subject again, my youngest grandson, aka Little Shit, has enlisted in the Navy and signed up as a Hull Technician. He's in for 5 active and 3 reserve. He's talking 20 active to retire at 38. I'm going to need a new nick name for him.
Given that career goal, I'd call him by his rank followed by his last name. Greet my son every morning as Deputy *******. Just sayin.

If the world knew how many projects started this way. We humans have a way of over complicating things.

Clarity to the Chaos.

I've built 3 houses designed on napkins. Foundation rough layout done with rocks painted with pink marking paint.
Right. When working on new projects I'd sketch out the overall designs with dimensions. It was my reference material for doing the CAD drawings.
You can put all dimensions and pertinent info into a list, however I found it easier to also have that visual of the end product.

Oh yes, this is what I do for a living…. In 25 years I have worked from plans 2 times.

How do you get around permitting, inspections and financing issues without a proper set of plans? We are behind in my area, but no way you get away with it even here. mtmuley

We don’t have any of those things here , at least not out in the rural areas.

Most places up here are built without permits or financing. One of the houses the owner decided to try and get a loan a few years later but no go without permits. He went to the county and applied for an "as built" permit. The building department wanted whatever he had for the design. He submitted the napkins. He paid the fines and fees and it was approved. All the county wants is the money. People building out of pocket pretty much build what they want. Besides that,,,,we are remote enough that the county prefers to ignore us.
