I am going to be hunting the late antlerless season with a smoke pole. I was up for the spike season and didn't find a tremendous amount of sign. Work had me bogged down pretty well though and it was only a few days I got out.

As I scout online, I am finding what may be more favorable areas in unit 24. I read awhile back elsewhere that the elk will head into unit 23 for the winter. Is that true? Any ideas or pointers on what I should look for or expect? I am simply looking to fill the freezer at this point.

I was hunting deer in that area last week. All the elk we saw were along the breaks of the Salmon River in rocky, brushy terrain. Hunted units 23 and 19A. Never saw an elk or much fresh sign up top. I think they like the more open, rocky/brushy break area as it allows them safety from most hunters and they can see really well (gives them a head start when the wolves are in the area).
