Not much to the kill story.
My son and daughter have shot a couple deer over the years and they have always wanted to tag alone. Just like me at that age and a lot of others on here, my son is now 16 with a nice truck, job, school, social life. Unlike the last few years, he`s off with his buddies or busy and hasn`t hunted hardly any this year and with little desire. I keep saying to myself, I was the exact same way and he`ll get back into it soon enough. Well, I finally talked him into going Saturday morning. One of the properties that is close to the house is very small (5 acres), but always produce a couple deer a year. Our stands are extremely close due to an L shape in the gas line right-a-way, which is our only shooting lanes. He looks down one part and I watch another, but we really can`t see down each others lanes. Remember, this is in NC!

He has always bragged about "never missing a deer", which he hasn`t. When his rifle goes off, I grab the rope and head his way because I know there`s something dead. If he shoots twice, I pretty much expect to drag two deer. The boy can`t spell his name...but he can shoot! :D

He was shooting his old single shot .243 when this doe stepped out. I could barely make her out through the brush, but she was walking and heading toward the edge. He rushes the shot...and misses! Even when he was real young, he would wait for the right shot, or not shoot at all. Anyway,I could see her standing there just looking trying to figure out what happened. It took him forever to get another bullet out of his pack, ease the gun open, and ease another bullet in because she was less than 100 yards away and he was in plan sight. But she stood there long enough. He finally got another shot, which dropped her in her tracks. I could actually hear him breathing heavy after the shot, lets out a deep breath and done the short fist pump and then lay back in the stand with a look of exhaustion! He later tells me...."It don`t get any better than that!" I actually think the miss was a good thing! It added to the adrenaline rush, and let him know that...he can miss! Maybe that`ll do it! ;)
Before skinning her, I put her on the scales because she was a nice mature doe. Right on 120lbs, which is a big doe for these parts!

By the time he graduates from high school the missed shot will have stretched to 200 + yards! Big believer in not forcing hunting, but making sure its available if desired by the young ones. Good job genesis273 and son.
