long range

And Dink you are right...some guys can do it...and very well, but the new guy that doesn't understand it..or can't keep from doing it...thinks he is good enough, because he did it call summer...yeah...have to watch who you tell.

Duck Slayer, I agree with you, like to shoot long range and like the long shots. I think that it shows marksmanship and if you like to hunt at that distance and can effectively take game at that distance then go for it. Sometimes you can not get close up and personnel with all game. I do like muzzel loader hunt and you have to be with in 100 to 150 yards to do the job, and a bow as stated in some of the other post for me has to be with in 40 yards Keep upi the good work and practice offten..

To each his own I guess. If someone has the capable equipment and the trigger time in to feel comfortable shooting at long range I think that's great. My personal opinion is that you should only bring the extreme long range shots into play when there is no other option and sometimes I don't even feel it becomes an option. Bed them and come back the next day if it's getting dark. I believe as an ethical hunter it is my responsibility to do everything I can to put an animal down as quickly and humanely as possible. I do target shoot at long range but the variables encountered in the field including shot angle, wind speed and direction, altitude, air density and temperature to name a few can change my bullet trajectory enough from my range session environment to make me question the likeliness of a quick and clean kill. On top of that the bullets energy loss at long range is significant. I don't doubt my ability under perfect conditions. I doubt my ability to compensate for everything else at a time when I'm under pressure or can't predict changes 800 yds away.

I have watched Long Range Pursuit and Best of the West on many occassions and in almost every episode I've looked at where they are and where the animal is and said to myself, "my God, they could close that gap by 500 yds or more and not have to worry about having a laptop in the field to compute adjustments." What I wonder is how many animals they hit and imobilized to figure out the final ajustments for the killing shot? I bet it happens and we never see that footage. I also don't care for the push to buy their long range ultra mag rifles and scopes so you too can just dial in the distance and kill things. It's a great setup but still requires a lot of trigger time and understanding of atmospheric factors. I don't think they do enough to push those points.

To set up at any range knowing you can descrease it and increase your odds of putting the animal down immediately is foolish. All my personal opinion which is worth $0.02 or less in the current economy.
