I'm hoping one of the upland enthusiasts out there might be able to help me out with a ptarmigan/ grouse question.
I've hunted grouse and ptarmigan in Colorado and Montana, but always during the first couple weeks of the season (September) and then left them largely alone once big game season started. This season I only got out a few times and my pup has that look in his eyes like I have let him down. I want to remedy the situation by hunting these last coupe of weekends of the season. I have tried out a couple of my September spots but the food sources are gone and with them the birds.
Has anyone chased upland birds with snow in the high country and if so where did you get into them? From what I've read ptarmigan stay high and grouse move up high as well. Does this seem to be consistent with what other have seen as the season wanes, and if it's true what are they eating and what kind of vegetation should I be looking for, obviously I'm not going to find them snacking on berries.
Below is where I might expect to find each bird on a mountain in September what about mid-nov?
