Landscapes (pics)

I took the dogs for a little bird hunt this afternoon. The grouse had their way with me and I ended up fighting my way through some truly epic brush on the way out, but when I stumbled out into the open with sticks all over me, this was waiting. Pretty day!IMG_4327.jpg

I'll admit the negativity of HuntTalk is getting to me lately and has me questioning whether I spend too much time here. To be clear, that says more about me than this forum.

On lunch break today I found myself thinking of chunks of the world that are doing just fine, which are often what I think about when I am in a funk. Here's one of those places.

Wildfire is a common and natural disturbance in interior Alaska landscapes.
Photos from our backyard:
Here is an common event....June1 wildfire in black spruce ignited from a lightning strike,

And here is an uncommon event... later that night heavy showers extinguished the fire.

Whenever I come across old homesites like this I can't help but wonder what life was like for the people that lived there. Sometimes I wish that I could trade places with them and enjoy the good ol' days. However, after I get home and flip on the lights, turn on running water and take a nice hot shower, I admit to myself - I ain't tough enough for the old days.

Hyalite Canyon morning. Getting ready to rope up for the climb on the left side ("Thin Chance"). Twin Falls can be seen in the distance at the low point in the saddle. It is about a 200 foot frozen waterfall this time of year. Really amazing place to be in the winter.
