Today was the last day of decent weather before things turn south for a bit, so the kids and I headed to the woods. I turned them loose and told them to follow deer trails and see what they could find. In minutes they both disappeared while I wandered around looking for sheds. After about 20 minutes I rounded them up. My 6 year old son came running to me with a knife!
According to him, he was walking through the woods and tripped on a stick. When he was laying on the ground he looked and there was a knife in front of him, in its sheath. It sounds like he spent the better part of the 20 minutes chopping at trees with it.
The knife is actually in pretty good shape. The sheath was covered in moss and the metal needs more buffing, but it was still pretty dang sharp. Next to no rust. It’s an Estwing and likely from around the 1950s or 60s according to some quick research. This land has been in my family since the mid 1800s so it likely was my grandpa’s or great-grandpa’s.
Anyways, I want this to be my son’s first hunting knife when he gets a bit older. Does anyone have any good ideas for refurbishing it? I can clean up the metal but I’m not quite sure what to do with the leather handle.
