I’m not positive what mange looks like, but this looks like what I imagine mange looks like. Maybe more lesions and open wounds. I asked AI and it’s positive it’s lichen growing on the hair, not mange. I’m going with mange.

Hard to say. Lots of things cause hairless. Mange is caused by lice, "ringworm" by a fungus, and apparently lichen can do the same. Maybe the local bio would be a good contact person.

Looks like it, probably psoroptic mange. See tons of it on the Elk Refuge. I used to have to take skin scrapings and ID mites under the microscope. Not super uncommon, especially in winter.

My skin has been crawling all day since helping my dad with this elk this morning. i wish i didn't have my dog with me at the time, she's going on a topical treatment as soon as i get home, as are the other dogs. gross.

I shot an old deer a few years ago that had that, it was the only time I ever gave meat away. May have been unwarranted, but I would have thought about the deer's nasty hide with every bite if I hadn't.

yeah,

yeah, old man river said he was going to skin it and hang it today, and i would've helped but i was already weirded out. it was pretty gross. if it were mine, i'd be calling fish and game to come look and get their advice, but he seemed unbothered. and said the meat all looks good, so yay for him.

Shot a whitetail.woth a big spot missing hair on his back once. I figured it was from going under a fence. It was miles, only reason I know is they attacked my arms apparently.

If it is Psoroptes, chances are slim you or the dog would contract it. The different mite species are fairly host specific.

But if it happened to be Sarcoptes (sarcoptic mange), that would be worse. Not as likely, but not impossible.

I believe the usual treatment is ivermectin, but your vet could tell you.
