I am starting to load for and old M77 270 22" barrel. Trying 140gr accubond with either IMR 4831 or Imr 4350. Has anyone loaded these for hunting? What did you find best results with? Also a 308 ruger american predator with 165gr accubond 22" barrel. Powder I have is RL15 and IMR 4064. Thank you in advance.

I have used all four combos you are looking at. Every rifle will have it's favorite. My 270 really liked IMR 4831 and shot both the 140 Accubond and 150 grain Partition very well. My Tikka in 308 win, shoots several bullet in the 165 and 150 well using IMR 4064. YMMV

I love 4350, it is my standby powder with verified loads in about 20 rifles. Not the first choice for velocity in anything I currently load but it will produce good accuracy. Just loaded 40 rounds for my 375 last night. Always good to have on hand. In the 308 I used Varget extensively in my duty rifles. Over a 20 year span I fired several thousand rounds of 308 a year in four different platforms. Varget worked in each one.
IMR 4064 has been my choice in a mdl 77 since about 1970, very consistent and I literally haven’t change a thing other than a little seating depth in 30 years.
That being said I am working on vihtavuori powders quite a bit. As I need to replace any of my Alliant powder I’m working up new loads. Been very happy with the results and my primary hunting rifles last year and this spring to Africa will be loaded with VihtaVuori powder and Accubonds or Partitions.
The powder and cartridge combinations you have are likely listed in every loading manual going back 60 years or so. You will likely have very acceptable results and which ever critters you are hunting won’t know you used “old school” powder and ball.

I guess what I am asking is what powder loads you have found that work for you. I know every gun will shoot a little different. Also what coal are you using. Thanks again.

Thanks for your replies. Anybody have what they have used in the 308?
I don’t have my notes available right now but I have the American 2 in .308, my gun didn’t like the 165 Accubond, the 150 grain Partition did very well with Varget. The load I worked up for whitetail hunting was a book max load of W748 and the 125 grain Ballistic Tip. I shoulder shot a large doe with it in the last few minutes of legal shooting light. The doe was about 260 yards out and dropped like a rock. The other three I shot with it were neck shots 80 yards and closer, a .22 Hornet would have given the same result.

.308 Win., 130 grain ttsx, 50.4 grains TAC, 2.810 COAL, Starline brass, 200 CCI primer.
3173 fps MV from my Tikka T3x compact 20” barrel.
.308 Win., 150 grain Accubonds, 46 grains Varget, 2.782 COAL, Same brass, etc…
2925 fps MV
