I also am in search of a rifle.. not sure if I need one. have a tikka 30-06, good enough to take down a Maine moose. now I got a tag in NM for elk. do I even need a 7mm / PRC, BC, 300 WIN, PRC, WSM?

06 and 270 have been 1A,1B all around rifles for a long time and for very good reason. If it shoots good and its easy to cary. I wouldn't worry about an upgrade.

That's where I am at. With the rifles I have now and all the components and equipment to load them, the "wonder" cartridges give me zero gain. I see no reason to basically duplicate. mtmuley

I’d rather have a suppressed 06 than a new 7. Especially I wasn’t wasn’t doing any hand loads or things of that nature

My 6.5CM Fieldcraft has become the only rifle I grab for big game. Suppressed .223 Tikka for hogs and coyotes. But I'm leaning toward the Fieldcraft for those too. It's ultra light and great ergonomics.

One of the greatest hunting books of times long gone by was "Tigrero" by Shasha Siemel. He earned international fame hunting Jaguars with a spear in South America.

So, he was a travelling gunsmith and of course earned money killing predatory cattle killing jaguars with a spear when they were brought to bay by a pack of dogs in the tall grass. He is credited with killing over 300 of them.

A short side story in the book is when he enters a public for profit wrestling match against some champ who is big but overweight and strong but slow. Shasha had some wresting training, he was solid muscle, light and very fast.

There was no contest. Shasha easily won. That is what using Barnes all copper bullets are like compared to old lead core copper jacketed bullets. They shed so much lead and pay a price in velocity for the wasted weight.

Unless you are looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle, the 30-06 is a great choice.

The Tikkas are getting expensive for what they are. They used to be 500, then 700 now 900. But everything is more expensive so it is what it is. Tikka also has 1moa guarantee and very good aftermarket support.

The Ruger Americans are where I see this the most. Gen l's were dirt cheap and now I think a gen ll is $750.
