I'm Trying to Decide on a New All Around Rifle.

I have a hard time seeing how fluting can aid in accuracy. I could see how one could get a slightly stiffer barrel at a given weight with a fluted vs round. I would think that fluting introduces additional negative variables for absolute peak precision than it does benefits. Nobody in the competitive shooting disciplines that require peak precision uses fluted barrels.

Sako Only flutes the barrels on their stainless Finnlight rifles. Probably as you say to make a thicker, stiffer, yet lighter barrel. Sako Finnlight rifles are famous for accuracy.

We use 30-06 for elk all the time. It works great. You definitely don't need a new rifle to do the hunt, but it never hurts to own more guns in my opinion.

If you can't kill an elk with an .06, it isn't the rifles fault. mtmuley

Unless you are looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle, the 30-06 is a great choice.

They have lots of models with fluted barrels. In fact, most of their barrels in the 90 lineup are.
Also, and I have told you this before, they use the same exact barrels on Tikkas as they do on Sakos. They do not discriminate between the actions when choosing a barrel to complete the task. It saves them money just keeping everything the same like that.

Yea I like my -06. But my I am going with a buddy who doesn’t have a rifle, and maybe looking for an excuse to get a rifle I can lend him as my western rifle. It’s not like I am saying I’ll even see a NM elk to even have a shot. But still

No your 30-06 is fine. Just practice in field positions and learn the rifle and load. Spend the money on a new varmint rifle.

@coleL have you pulled the trigger on one yet? I have had one tikka and it was a dud but I think that was a misnomer.

I switched to a bergara and have loved them. Easy to find accessories, great triggers and awesome barrels. The only down side is most of them are HEAVY but it makes them easy to shoot.

If you are set between the tikka or ruger though tikka will hands down be your best choice.

for the 7 mm / prc, or 300 win / prc/ WSM the new tikka has the 22" barrel. realistically for a hunting distance does it make a difference, if im not using a suppressor ?

All of those calibers will work for elk. Barrel length is another long topic but in the end it doesn’t matter. I like 22”+ plus the elk will never know the barrel length or caliber.
