Sako Only flutes the barrels on their stainless Finnlight rifles. Probably as you say to make a thicker, stiffer, yet lighter barrel. Sako Finnlight rifles are famous for accuracy.I have a hard time seeing how fluting can aid in accuracy. I could see how one could get a slightly stiffer barrel at a given weight with a fluted vs round. I would think that fluting introduces additional negative variables for absolute peak precision than it does benefits. Nobody in the competitive shooting disciplines that require peak precision uses fluted barrels.
