I don't wish to derail a long running thread nor start a side battle because I realize the risk is real. Not being a participant in this battle over guilt and hatred, I need some clarification. Being of scottish heritage, we have experienced slavery. Following an epic battle that the Scots lost, to solve a epic problem, they bundled up the Scots and sent them the new world as slaves. So the issue of slavery isn't confined to the blacks.

At a gathering a number of years ago, a sweet older lady and a neighbor got into stressful discussion over family origins. The old girl (northern Italian) seemed agitated at the neighbor, who was Sicilian. Words like wop and dago were used freely. Since the southern Italian is darker skinned than northern Italians, would that be racism or just a neighborhood pissing contest.

My grandfather worked on the railroad for 48 years as an engineer. He really had some hard feelings for irishmen. Now in the migration of the family, three kids were born in scotland, then three kids were born in Ireland , and then three kids were born in Iowa. He died when I was young but I have often wondered if the Irish thing was family induced or railroad. Is that racism.

In the early 1970s I was assigned by the Forest Service to work on a fire out of Missoula. We all worked diligently on the project but one day one of the managers assigned the Blackfoot Hot Shot crew to work with the Crow Hot Shot crew. Hard feelings erupted and we relived epic battles of the last number of centuries. Is that racism or just a neighborhood squabble.

In marrying into my wife's family I discovered somewhat of historic conflict between the Croations and the Serbs. The conflict as I understand has gone on for centuries. Is that racism?

I'm sorry but I have never had anyone with a dark complection to hate. Everyone I ever met was very similar to me in likes, dislikes, and attitude. I must not have had a proper upbringing.

Panda Bear - I worked a lifetime for jerks, egotists, and useless bastards. When I retired I swore never again. I consult and go into it with the rules that we will treat each other with respct and dignity. At anytime those rules are violated I go home. No one should have to put up with what you have. As a society we need to work on a little of respect and consideration.

By definition racism is prejudice, discrimination or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group. Prejudice and racism is not just a issue in the United States, it is a world wide problem.

Being the OP of the other thread, I can say with 100 % sincerity it was never intended to invoke guilt and/or hatred, nor do I feel it has. It’s certainly exposed some shallow minds and prejudices.

Prejudice is like pornography. It’s not always easy to define, but you sure as hell know it when you see it.

I grew up highly prejudiced. I learned at a young age to make fun of people based on race, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation. When I got to college, one of my best friends had a gay brother. I ended up living with two brothers from the ghetto in Tacoma. I learned differently, but not before i almost got my ass kicked one night after too much to drink. Fortunately the person had the grace to not beat the shit out of me for my insensitive comments.

I have no guilt, shame or hatred. I do have a burning desire to see things done differently.

So what is your point? Should we all dig into our ancestors to either absolve ourselves of the blame of racism or be free of it? I am of Scandanavian decent. Both sides. My ancestors did bad things. My fault? mtmuley

This is the kind of political squabble that Fin (and the rest of us) are not a fan of. This has exactly what to do with hunting? Don't you have another forum to post this on, like idano... Facebook?

Having lived in Italy for a substantial amount of time (in Vicenza) I can provide a little perspective on that one. Northern Italians (from +- Florence north) generally DO use derogatory terms for southern Italians. While they have what can be viewed as racial connotations (the most common where I lived was "mud people") the reality of that conflict is 2 fold. First, a LARGE portion of northern Italy is histroically Germanic in nature due having been a part of Austria until the relatively recent past and sharing a border with Switzerland. As such there is a cultural difference. Second, southern Italy is very poor relative to the industrial north and is the cradle of the mafia (especially Naples, Sicily and Calabria). Speech patterns in the south are VERY different from classic Italian, folks in the north struggle to even understand Sicilians (the exaggerated/mumbled/gangstered-up Italian you hear on the east coast of the US is a product of that) comparable to a deep Appalachian accent in the US . Italy is a largely socialized state and the folks of northern Italy are highly resentful of the huge amount of resources made in the north only to be sent to the south. This is a general, but common set of views.

I didn't read the post on the other thread @Panda Bear, I read this one. By itself it seemed to me just another political rant about race, out of context.

Perhaps when commenting on a post we should do it... (wait for it)... ON THAT POST!?:p;)
