Idaho Fish and Game commissioner charged with poaching bull elk

Upper Snake Region Commissioner Brody Harshbarger was charged March 6 with seven misdemeanor violations: three counts of unlawful taking of game animals, one count of hunting without an appropriate tag, one count of hunting from a motorized vehicle, one count of shooting across a public highway and one count of trespassing on private property to hunt. Each charge carries a penalty of up to six months in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. Several of the charges also carry possible $750 civil penalties and hunting license revocations of one to three years. Harshbarger has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday, but the governor’s office provided the Idaho Statesman with a letter indicating that Harshbarger has decided to “voluntarily postpone” his commissioner duties.

Me? This should be used as Poster Child, max sentencing, max fines and penalties, max confiscation of any and all equipment used in crime. Demonstrate that those in charge to protect our game will not be treated with kid gloves.

If poaching a bull elk isn't a felony, what stops people who don't draw a tag from just going out shooting a nice big elk wherever and whenever they feel like?
It costs thousands of dollars to hunt an elk on prime private land, if poaching one while trespassing is just a misdemeanor and a $1,000 fine I guess its mostly just the honor system that keeps poachers from exterminating the entire elk population.

Don't think this would ever happen in Washington due to the fact that I doubt that any of the commissioners hunt. They are pretty much all animal lovers and pro predator.
I agree, nail him to the wall, hope he gets the stiffest penalties possible, but not holding my breath.
