Going on my first Sept elk hunt. Have rifle hunted the last few years in 36b for bulls(going back there for a cow hunt this year). Very excited to finally have a chance to hunt the rut with a bow.
I'm looking at going into the sheep mountain/Bowery Peak area or the Herd Mountain area.
Planning on backpacking in for 6-7 days. I've also found a few other areas and drainages that look good.
Anyone have experience in these areas?

Not those areas my family hunts this area though pretty often and you better take a deer tag as well some big bulls and bucks.

I don't have any experience in that area, but I've been looking at it for a while. Looks like great country, good luck.

Many horse hunters in that unit. The country looks great on google earth, then you get there and there are many hunters on horseback and even more outfitters on horses. There are also quite a few year round open dirtbike/atv trails.

Very few deer. Lots of antelope at 10,500 feet. It's a trip! Gorgeous country though. Find some places without any trails.
