Hunting gimmicks

Cape keeper and Gut Rake are two my friends and I still laugh about. Hard to find much evidence of them online anymore

I can think of about 15 instances where I wish I had that thing prior to GPS and Phone apps..... lol

My bow rope has a nice reflective wrap around the end of it, which serves a similar purpose if/when I remember to hang it so it can be seen with my head lamp.

But bow season really hasn’t started unless I stumble around like a dope for 5 minutes looking for my tree stand that was within 30 yards the whole time.

When I was pretty young my dad got super sick at camp in the night and so I went in the woods by myself to my stand in the dark in the morning and the fog was so thick that I got turned around and I finally just sat down because it was daylight but I couldn't see 25 feet. When the fog burned off I was 10 yards from my stand.

I wish that was the only time that happened but at least back then, I was a kid. lmao.

Seems funny to me that my dad (when was in his 40's) was all worried that someone was going to find his stand and kill his big buck back in the 1990's....But, today, at 75 years old, he has a piece of pink ribbon on about every single tree leading up to his stand sites. lol

Thought we had a thread for this but couldn't find it. Post up dumb the gimmicks here. Wtf is this shit? Seriously...
My first thought, “man I wish I had that 20 years ago in high school.” Would have saved me a lot of those little reflective tacs I stuck in trees. Those only last one season. Most of my stands were in giant oak trees surrounded by much smaller trees so didn’t usually have difficulty finding stands but I can think of several instances I was walking circles around a stand in the dark lol.

If you have tree stand hunted before in the middle of a big woods pre phone era and you didn't get lost/confused at least once in the dark the only explanation is that you were afraid of the dark and always waited until it was light enough to walk to your stand
Shit, even with phones I've done this. "I'm gonna get in really early today to make sure I'm not spooking deer on the way to their bedding area". Proceeds to wonder around a bit after turning down the wrong trail...

I use paracord that has reflective material braided in. Still can't say I haven't wondered around a bit to a stand because I didn't "need" to turn the headlamp on.

Perhaps i just cant relate - as ive not hunted in a stand.

But wouldnt you just... mark it on a gps?

For sure. For some reason, I feel like it’s a failure to have to pull the phone or GPS out, but that’s what happens after 5 mins of futility.

I may or may not have taken those reflective tacks and rearranged them to give someone a nice surprise next time they hunted the spot.
I had this happen to me in a dense swamp! Waited daylight. So then used an old rake handle with double sided tape to place tacks about 12-13' off ground. I often wondered of the reactions then... But had L2-L5 back fusion last summer and treestands no longer in my hunting activity. Life goes on and still in woods.
