Finally got the call yesterday! "Dad can you take one of your grandkids to his first hunter ed class tonight?"

Wow, three hours of class right after work. A lot of younger kids (I have my own opinion on how old they should be to take HE though) lost attention span after the first half hour. Guy did a pretty good job of attempting to keep their attention although I think he lost some on the question, "Just because it is legal to do something, is it ethical?" At least it got some of them asking questions in the what if variety.

Very positve experience and some good question/answer/discussion on the way home. Just hope gram can irrigate for me on Thursday so I can spend some more time with the grandson.

Congrats on getting to help your grandson with an important life skill,,nothing better than takin the kids or grandkids hunting

My oldest read the chapters in the manual with My Grandfather each night. Made for some good discussion. I took her to the classroom sessions. That made my 3rd or 4th time taking the class if you count Bowhunter education.

Made my wife take my middle daughter to hers. Kids are like a sponge at that age. My Dad was the one she did the chapters with.

Now my 6 year old is shooting cans in the back yard. One time when I was doing some work in front of HER shooting range, I said to put the gun away. She replied "I'm not gonna shoot Daddy, I just like holding it." Looks like we will be doing HE in another 3 years....

I teach HE and one of the unique things I do in my class is to make each kid ask someone to be their Hunting Mentor and after each class period they have an assignment to ask their mentor a question. There is so much more to teach than we can effectively do in a class, I think it is a good way to keep the conversations going and get them tied in with someone who they pick as a positive role model. It sounds like you are filling that role well and I hope you get as much out of it as the child does!
