HTer Goals '25 Edition

My 74th birthday is a month into the rear view mirror. Today was leg day, and I felt fairly spry. So, to finish off the deadlift session, I put 360# on the trap bar. It came up easily enough to know, if inclined, I could pull more from the floor.

Moved back to Montana in February. Driving a desk for two years had taken its toll. So. Went skiing, got back into rugby, started working out again. Things were looking up.

Then I picked up something resembling pneumonia- 103-104 fever for 5 days, coughing 3 weeks, couldn’t climb stairs or go outside without a coughing fit that brought me to my knees. Lost 11 lbs because I was coughing too hard to eat. Probably should’ve gone to the hospital.

Finally was able to run two miles Saturday- 20 minutes. Not great. Sunday- 19 minutes. Better.

Hitting the gym to lift 2x a week, then swimming or running 3x a week, plus sports 2x a week for wind sprints. It’s going slow, but I’m considering it rehab/PT at this point. Need to get up to a decent 5k pace for a race I was volunteered for next month.

Hiking to come soon. I need some high country in my life.
Finally running two miles. Was happy enough to be under 20 min. Hit 18 min this week. Going to add a mile next week. Two weeks to the 5k (which happens to be at 10,000 feet…).

Humbled today.

25K run on Mt. Spokane. Admittedly not as prepared as I could have been. I don’t know what I don’t know in regards to some of the longer trail runs. 9.5 miles was my longest trail run and I felt really good on that one, thought this would be tough but got crushed. That being said:

30 min delayed start.
Mismarked trail led to a 1.5mile detour. Blazing sun, 82* when I finished.
Second of 2 aid stations ran out of water after a really long uphill section, was only able to get maybe 12 ounces.

Was hurting bad towards the end, definitely dehydration and the accompanying leg cramps. Gentleman gave me the rest of his water and a very kind woman stopped and gave me some salt pills and a goo packet. Walked with me the rest of the way. Like I said, humbled. Total of 17.75 miles according to OnX.

Well, I made it 16 straight months of hitting 200 pushups/day on average for the month. I was benching in April and messed up my elbow, so was 2,000 short in May. I tried to make it up last month and did an extra 3,000. Time to start a new streak. :D

I still can't bench very heavy, but most everything else is back to normal.

The beartooth run?

That’s impressive.

Well, nothing like getting a Bighorn Sheep tag in a tough unit to get a person back on track.

Thankfully I was doing really good up until the middle of April when I let work get the better of me and started slacking off on the running and getting in shape.

I've run 3 out of the 5 days since I found out I drew the tag and have put getting in shape as a high priority. Just over 3 miles each time. Only 2 months to go before the season starts so not going to be able to get to where I know I should be but who knows, maybe I can get close. I've always kind of thought that being able to run 6 miles in an hour was a decent measuring stick on what kind of shape I'm in, not sure I can get to that in 2 months but I'm going to try.

Going to be trying to workout every day. If I don't run then I will be either walking on a 15% incline on the treadmill, doing weighted lunges or something. Really probably need to start some core body weight type stuff with pushups and the dreaded burpees.

Yep. “Oh, let’s do a 5k!”, she said. “It’ll be fun!”, she said.

Left out the tiny little detail that it’s literally the highest altitude run in the country.
It's a fun 5k. Enjoy it and hopefully you will see some goats.

Did 30 min of intervals on the exercise bike yesterday.

Ran exactly 5k this morning in 29:56. Then went to the gym and lifted before lunch. Worked in on a small set a with a trap bar that was set up 315, just to see. Haven’t really tried that in… well, years. Felt good.

Might actually survive this run. Feels like a good start to hunting season prep, at least.
