Big update! The Senate Finance committee has maintained the inclusion of the Hearing Protection Act and added section 3. They also added the SHORT act which will remove short barrel rifles and shotguns from the NFA restrictions. For those who don't know, there are I believe 16 states where Suppressors are legal but legality is contingent on NFA registration. Section is a protection from those states automatically banning Suppressors should this pass. Keep up the good work people, we're another step closer to a historic 2A win. Make the calls (and while you've got em on the phone tell em to keep their sticky paws off our public lands)

As we've been tracking the "Byrd Bath" and applying pressure to prevent the sale of public lands, we also need to keep an eye on the HPA and SHORT act. If the parliamentarian tries to cut it we need to pressure Thune to override. The message is simple. The NFA is a tax, there is documented testimony from the AG in 1934 clearly stating it is a tax which was designed to go around the protections of the 2A. Because it is a tax it is completely "Byrd Proof" and should remain in the bill.

Major Update and it's not good. The activist parliamentarian decided that HPA and SHORT act don't pass the Byrd test, which is completely wrong because the NFA is clearly a tax. Here's the kicker. The Parliamentarians rulings are not binding, they are suggestions. We need to melt the phones specifically in Majority Leader Thune's office and pressure him to override, and if that fails, pressure your senators and reps to kill the bill until they override the Parliamentarian on this.

Left a message with Thune, and all my senators and reps, about HPA, SHORT, and Lee. We’ll see how it goes.

I kinda suspected this would happen when the Senate decided to go further with the language in the bill. They should have simply worked with removing the tax stamp fee. The rest could have been a battle for another day.

Problem is though, she's just flat out incorrect. It's a tax and thereby budgetary. Unfortunately I don't think the Senate has the stones to override. However, the fights not over yet. Call your senators and reps and tell them to vote "No" unless this and many other things she cut are fixed. (Except the public lands sale, we don't want that back in there)

This is so tiresome. They all need thrown out on their asses and get a real job. No more leeching on the taxpayers. Everyone should hammer Vance to put it back in. I don’t think he has the spine but it’s worth a shot.

I don’t understand what makes the parliamentarian an activist other than she didn’t decide in this favor. She has served multiple administrations and upset Republican and Democrat alike.

Let’s be honest Congress has too often tried to push the limits on what can be passed under “budget reconciliation.”

Let’s see a Senator have the guts to put it up to a 60% vote and actually work with people to get something passed.

I’m fatigued with seeing politicians trying to take an easier way then throwing a fit when they don’t get their way.

I am not as familiar with this specific legislation and frankly it takes a back seat to public lands at this point. I will read up more on it so I can be more educated on it. I am most likely in favor of it. However, it seems more like legality of certain firearms and suppressors as opposed to the tax.

What’s the verdict on this? Will suppressors stay expensive just without the tax stamp? Thinking about getting another one coming and not excited to pay what I did for my first one.

I can’t see any reason this change would see manufacturers charge less. They’re already ridiculously overpriced
Gotcha. Yeah that’s what I was thinking. Needed them pulled from the NFA for the price to crash

Prices will really depend on how/if the manufacturers are able/willing to scale production. Prices will never come down if demand continues to outstrip supply. A lot of cans have never been back to “inventory” level since eforms have sped the process up so much. The tax being removed will only increase demand short term. The danger is once there’s a new administration if the tax can be removed via reconciliation, it can be added back. Will it still only be $200??

It will be interesting to see where the lawsuit ends up. GOA, Silencerco, Silencer Shop, and some others just filed a lawsuit basically saying that since the tax is now zero, there is no justification for the registration. Makes sense, hopefully the courts agree.

I really want to pick up another hunting can and am in the same boat wondering about how this will play out. Since the $0 tax doesn't take effect until 1/1/2026, I imagine there is going to be a flood of purchases in January so finding what you want in stock is going to be hard next year... But maybe there will be some promotions this fall to entice buyers if there's a short-term lull in demand, because it's hard to imagine a ton of people opting to pay an extra $200 rather than wait 5 months.

I’ve seen several outfits claiming they will reimburse customers for the tax stamp if they purchase prior to 1/1/26
