How far do you stay upwind of elk?

“From my experience, I've watched elk turn and burn at 600 yards as the thermals shift from a glassing spot when the elk were on my side of the canyon instead of across the way.”

I’ve had this same experience with moose. Moose have probably the best nose of any North American big game animal. Hunters often don’t give moose due credit for their noses because bulls are so obsessed when in rut.

The bull moose I shot this fall I gave an extra 1/2 mile on my stalk due to thermals.

Lots of variables.
Thermal pressure
Time of day
Wind speed
Flat or mountains
Hunting up or downhill
The more elk together means more noses to smell you and more eyes to spot you.
