How can this be possible? Colorado Unit 17 Bighorn Sheep tag!!

If anything, beautiful, beautiful country and Salida is a pretty decent sized town with amenities right next to it if you need to resupply (or snag a hot meal). Moonlight Pizza is one of our favorites.

Congratulations Nathan! That’s super awesome.

Looking forward to hearing about your adventure.

And quite a coincidence...I clicked on a suggested video on YouTube after watching Randy's video today...a Colorado sheep hunt. Read the comments to see if I could tell where it was at. No luck there, but someone in the comments said that they drew S17 this year. Now that was 3 weeks ago, so maybe they already turned it in. ;)

Not to hijack your thread but funny story…I was called for a deer tag yesterday (61 muzzleloader). I called to accept the tag and talk with the lady running the program. I initially told her I was calling about the sheep tag (just playing around of course). There was a long awkward pause. She then said “Sir, I am really sorry but we just offered the tag to the next in line”. I explained I was just joking and told her I was calling for a deer tag. She explained that people miss their window a lot. I was shocked that somebody got a reissue sheep tag…then see your thread. Huge congrats and I just thought it was funny to see your post considering my conversation.

I should have known better than to put the unit # in the post, but it's a sheep tag, what could it hurt...

Doing a google search trying to see my outfitter options, or doing any kind of search for Colorado Unit 17 Sheep the #1 hit is now this thread. HuntTalk's metadata is STRONG.

I had called one outfitter yesterday and we had a good talk and he is looking for a guide since he is booked up so I emailed a couple others just in case he can't find someone. Got an email back from the same outfitter, turns out they run 2 of the 3 places that I thought looked good enough to inquire with.

Did get some cardio in last night, need to keep on the gas on that for sure. Just barely over 2 months before the tag starts.

You've had great luck with tags this year, just keep the luck train going and bag a beautiful sheep!

Excited to follow along with this one!

Sounds like you’re set on a guide? I’ve drawn three sheep tags and had fantastic DIY hunts.

With only 1 of 6 of the ram tag holders being successful the last 2 years and the crazy fall I have, I really think going guided is the way to go. It will completely blow my hunting budget for like the next 5 years but the chances of drawing tags like this is so low I might not draw any other tags for a while.

After never hiring a guide before (other than Africa) I might end up going guided for me or my son on 3 different hunts this year. 4 if you count New Zealand. If this was my only tag I would be more tempted to try it DIY, but the very low success rates the last 2 years have me concerned a bit even with a guide.

Do you know the guide’s success rate?

The outfitter claims a very high success rate for that unit. They just don't always end up with a hunter in the unit.

They are completely booked up though and are looking to see if they can find a guide for me. He has a guy that he thinks would be very good but he doesn't guide for them routinely. They don't have a hunter for this unit from what I understand, but they have like 3 or 4 sheep guides and they are all booked in other units. We are working on the schedule as well so see the options there.

There is one other outfitter that is for sure a different outfitter that I have a call in that I haven't heard back from. There are a couple other outfitters that say on their website that they don't normally guide this unit but that they can probably add it if needed. I haven't contacted any of those yet, just the 3 that list this unit on their website as a unit that they guide for sheep. 2 of those are the same outfitter (Flat Tops Wilderness Guides and Horn Fork Guides). Horn Fork Guides are who I've talked with on the phone and they are based out of Buena Vista which is right at the base of unit 17.

I sure wish you the very best luck. What a fall and opportunity that landed in your lap.
