Went out on a scouting trip today to look at some new areas. While I was walking along a meadow I came across some wild horses, which leads to my question. Will the presence of wild horses affect the behavior of elk? The deer standing 100 yards from the horses sure didn't seem to care but I didn't know if elk would react differently.

Also, anything else I should know about hunting an area with wild horses?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know how it really affects elk behavior but I do know they are very annoying. They make a lot of noise, are spooky towards humans, and will make your heart skip when you think you spotted elk moving through the timber only to discover otherwise. I was running into them in unit 51 last year. I really wish they had the same protection as feral pigs - none.

Where we hunt horses have the same effect as cows which is none. The horses and cows are there all the time and the elk pay on attention to them at all. I have noticed that the elk will water at times when the horses or cows are not present.
