Out of curiosity I checked the NOAA buoy data for Crescent City (since that's where the warnings in the linked article were). Buoy number is 46027. Significant wave height readings have been and are under 5'. That measurement usually shows up a bit smaller on the beach. Surfline is predicting a whopping 1' - 2' day of surf, but with fair winds. Someone with a 9' longboard miiiight have a chance of catching a decent little wave. Considering there's a whole culture of people who chase and regularly surf heavy waves in the 50' - 100' range it would have taken something pretty significant to rack up any social media hits.
