Haven’t been in the woods here in Indiana this year, which is very unusual for me. New job, and warm weather have kept me from getting to excited about going.
Didn’t sleep worth a crap last night, and at 5a.m. I was staring at the ceiling fan in our bedroom. Well it is a cool morning and the bucks should be getting with it so…
Got to my stand plenty early and glad that I did because it was so quiet you could hear a mouse fart a hundred yards away. Watched the woods come alive and all the creatures roaming around…except deer of course. Around 8a.m I swear I heard a buck grunt and about 10 minutes later I saw a doe running around down by the creek. I grabbed my bow off the hook and watched her bolt up the hill right in front of my stand. Then I heard another deer bound across the creek. Couldn’t see it but then I heard a series of tending grunts. The buck hound dogged that does trail. I could tell he was a mature buck, but couldn’t quite size up his head gear to see if he was one that I wanted to use my buck tag on. He kept coming and first thing I noticed was how tall his brow tones were. I liked what I saw! He continued right on the does trail. He stopped, and I drew my bow. Just as I was getting ready to release the air he bolted towards the doe! She went into some thick brush in front of me and bedded down. The buck circled down wind of me. I drew my bow again and instead of following the doe he turned towards me looking my way and sniffing the air. It was almost like he was looking right at me. I had my pin settled centered in the middle of his neck at an angle that would put it right into the boiler room. I released the arrow and watched it go right where I was aiming. He bolted and I lost sight of him when he crossed back across the creek. I was pretty sure I heard him crash. I waited an hour just to be sure.
Watched this younger buck beat up a tree while I waited to retrieve my buck.

After I climbed down I went to where the buck was standing when I shot. Found a blood… A LOT of blood!

Easy tracking job to say the least.

He wasn’t a 4x4 like I had thought but a 3x4 and the left side had some cool features to it. I like odd looking antlers.

Well I quickly field dressed him and drove back home to get the game cart. I also told my stepson and his 2 friends that I had a job for them. They were excited to go.. I let them try a bit to move the buck through the woods but took over for them. They had a blast plus it gave my wife a bit of rest!

Indiana has a 1 buck rule some my focus will be on getting a few does, and helping friends and family out with finding a buck of their own!

Yes it works great here in Indiana especially stalking in standing corn. I wish First Light wouldn’t have stopped using it.
Yea I bought A LOT of First Light ASAT when they did their 40% discontinuation sale. ASAT themselves make their own but haven’t tried any of the newer merino stuff since I have enough.

Nicely done! Sweet buck! That’s some good looking country. Reminds me of where I grew up hunting. I miss hunting Indiana.

It isn’t what it used to be. I used to have more places to hunt than I could count. Now everyone is leasing out this land. I am down to 2 places and know that one day they will be gone as well. Unless I hit the lottery (which I won’t because I don’t play) or someone sales me land cheap, my hunting here will be gone.
