History Found In the Field

Here are a couple of more recent finds. Research says the car is a 1940 cheverolet. But it definately had a custom bumper and the back converted into a flat bed. Best guess the CCC camp boys left it behind.

Found this on a higher point overlooking some areas. The rock stood out compared to the others. Do you think it is part of a cutting tool since it has multiple nicks out of it? I am not expert but it would be sweet if others thought it was or could say it's not1000018897.jpg

We find a lot of stuff that they started on and for what ever reason discarded. Usually in chip piles. There’s lots of well known villages and camps in my area where you can find piles of the chips along with some started or broken pieces. I’m not saying that’s what that is, I’m no expert.

Edit to add: they always camped near creeks on the highest point in my area.

Even better.. it’s not a horse shoe! It belonged to a more refined and more resilient beast. A humble mule.
Good catch. I didn’t know there was a difference between a horseshoe and a muleshoe. I read about the difference just now online. Thanks for the information. Happy hunting to all, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

There are dozens of these around home.
Stopped and grabbed a couple pics today.
A husband and wife have taken the task of redoing and refurbishing these old signs to bring them back to be seen for years to come. SDPB did a short show on them that was very interesting.
A little more about the trail signs HERE.

Reference, Indian artifact..........back to the picture on post #182 and a few after. I have a sandstone piece about 7" in diameter, 3" high, with a grove around it 1" down from the top. I found this in a small creek that once had Steelhead and Salmon runs. An old timer in his late 80's told me it was used by Indians to hold down nets, material, whatever to trap the fish. This was when I in 1957 when I was a kid.
I will email it to a friend of mine after my wife takes a picture of it. He has posted pictures for me in the past.....Hey Dave N. you reading this?

Thanks for the post and pictures. I travel and hunt in the general area. I wasn’t aware of the signs or history.

I love South Dakota but that wind can be brutal at times! Happy hunting to all, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

Thank you Dave for posting pictures!

I found most of these in the 50 and 60's on my relatives ranches, but a few after that.

I have another picture to post when my wife can send it to Dave, later today I hope.

Picture coming soon..........Someone please tell me what they think the broken one tied together is. It is the one I found in a creek bed that used to have Steelhead and Salmon runs.

In 2018 I got a late season cow tag here in Nevada. At that time, the tag ran basically all of December and all of January. I had a few close calls, but didn't end up filling my tag until the last day of season, solo, in the middle of absolute nowhere. I drew the tag again in '21, but now the season was only most of December. So, I got out there early in the season, and went to the place that I harvested before to check for sign. As I was leaving the truck, I nearly stepped on this awesome old bottle sitting at the base of a sagebrush. Its not a particularly rare bottle, but being from the turn of the last century, it somehow survived 120ish years outdoors without getting trampled by cattle or elk. There was no point in time that this area was commonly traveled, its been past BFE forever. It possible that it ended up there long after it was made, but that seems unlikely. I've found lots of old bottles in dumps near towns of buildings, but this was a couple hundred yards off a rough road to nowhere.

Not sure, but I would bet this bourbon was a short partnership with E.H. Taylor, the mayor of Franfort and the man who started the "bottled in bond" laws that forced bourbon distillers to actually make real bourbon and not cheap poison that would ruin the image of real Kentucky bourbon. Awesome find!

Pretty decent 3-D course on the hill above the Buffalo Trace Distillery, if you ever make it over that way @beaglegun
