  • Hi Paul, I saw your post about U24. I was out there last week to scout for 1st rifle. seems outfitters will make this season very crowded. in your experience do elk move to public? do they get hunted in the private? it seems they haven't moved from private in a long time. wondering if I should head elsewhere hay flats?

One of the outfitters lost two horses as well. His first season group did terrible, one bull and nothing else but bears.
We saw a total of four elk that were shootable, two cows and two bulls. All died opening day. We scouted before the season and found almost no sign compared to august when we had elk all over around camp.

The majority of the herds were stacked up in the hay fields on the bottom on "Blumberg's Haven". We also saw one ranch herding elk back onto their property so their clients could shoot them, illegal and unethical.

I'm waiting to see how this wolf thing works out this winter, but we are moving to a different area for sure. But on the good side, according to the DOW we DO NOT HAVE WOLVES, we have very large aggressive coyotes, and that is a direct quote. So, take that for what it's worth.
