I'm in PA and have many semi-auto rifles but rifle season in PA, especially opening day, has enough lead flying. Would my AR-10 make a great deer rifle? Sure, but I have other guns I can use and wee aren't shooting very far in Western PA. I usually hunt with a revolver.

I agree with some of the others who said get a pump. My old 141 in 32 Remington and the 760 in 30-06 still put meat in the freezer with quick follow up shot if needed.

We got full Sunday hunting finally this year, semi's in the same year will be enough to explode some boomer heads. Fingers crossed.

PA ALREADY allows SA shotguns for big game hunting so allowing rifles is not a big change.

20 man deer drives and semi-autos in heavy cover... what could possibly go wrong??? I still can picture my class mate showering after gym class with his exit wound just off the point of his shoulder blade about 5-6" around, beet red, and about 1-1/2" deep from tissue loss. How he didn't die is a mystery and a miracle of modern medicine as one lung had to get pulverised. And a few years back the same camp carried out another one, not sure if he made it or not... both cases were 'unknown shooter".

PA posted guidance on deer drives like anyone actually follows so the type of weapon is completely irrelevant.

Tips for a safe and successful big-game drive​

• Plan your drives – Be organized. Everyone must know their role. Decide how many drivers are needed and where standers will be located.
• Communicate – Stay in constant communication with other drivers so that you know the location of those around you.
• Know your zone – Be aware of your zone of fire. Identify the areas in front of you where you can safely attempt a shot, knowing that those areas are changing as you move across the landscape.
• When in doubt, don’t shoot – If forced to make a split-second decision about whether it is safe to take a shot, err on the side of caution and don’t shoot.

Maybe have everyone read and sign cause it seems like clueless unsafe behavior.

The trend for Iowa is AR’s in gun deer season. It is like Call of Duty out there. For every responsible AR hunter there is another one who is spray and pray. Conservation officers deal with shot people, livestock, and buildings every December.

Zumbo was right. Be careful what you wish for.

IMO, this could be partly addresssed with capacity limits. Which IMO would help with passage and allow the vast majority of classic old autos to be used.

Wisconsin has had 6 of their 10 safest hunting seasons since legalizing rifles statewide 10+ years ago. They have no restrictions on action type or caliber. It's not quite as crowded as PA though.

There is no noticeable advantage to a semi auto. If you miss with the first shot, rarely does the animal stand there giving you a second shot. If it does, I have as much chance as getting a good second shot off with an AR as I do with my 1885. Honestly don't remember the last time I took more than one shot, it really is a non issue as far as fair chase goes

When shooting more than one animal, there’s a noticeable advantage. I’ve taken my BAR .270 more than a few times when doe hunting. Carried it the other day hog hunting. Almost got a second hog.
