I'll be in Melbourne for 16 days...Last minute work trip, I'll likely fly out late next week. I'm sure I'll be consumed by work but I'll also have two weekends to kill. If anyone here has any ideas on day trips or things to do feel free to reach out. I've been to New Zealand once and really enjoyed the trout fishing there. I'm hoping I can bring a fly rod and maybe go explore for a day or two. All ears on places to eat or other ideas on things worth checking out...I hear Sydney is worth visiting and only a short flight away.

Never been there, but I think of great whites when I think of Australia. A shark cage tour could be cool. A quick google search shows you'd have to take a flight to get to one from Melbourne, so not sure it's in your schedule or not. Alternatively, you could just hop in the ocean and take your chances of finding one on your own ;)

I’ve spent maybe close to a year in Melbourne- likely a half dozen or more trips all in the mid-late 90s.

I wouldn’t fly to Sydney.

Make a trip to the Great Ocean Road and take in an AFL game.

The restaurants were excellent. See if Vlado’s steakhouse and the Flower Drum are still around. There’s a Chinatown area in downtown and dynamite sushi for crazy cheap, all sorts of excellent ethnic type food. I lived in South Yarra off Chapel Street for 4 months, it was not a bad time or place to be.

I’ve lived in Melbourne for 6 months and it’s a great city to visit. I’d recommend grabbing a car and driving the Great Ocean Road, attend an event at the MCG, visit the Yarra valley vineyards, if you’re into penguins then you can visit them south of Melbourne at Philip Island.

I'll be close to that area...I'll probably stay across from flag staff gardens just south of the Queen Victoria Market. It'll be a nice 10 minute walk to work. I've heard the 3$ sushi is excellent. I'll definitely see if those restaurants are still in business. Should have some time for some good meals at a minimum.

The people are great and they treat Americans incredibly well. They all want to be your best friend. I worked for 2 companies in Melbourne- Tattersalls and Tabcorp. I also spent a lot of time in Adelaide and Darwin. Hunted out of all three places feral and native critters.

I’ll keep posting food, probably what I’m most excited about. Haven’t really spent more than a day or two at a time in a big city so I’m really enjoying the variety and quality of all the food and coffee.

At some point I’ll try a meat pie as that’s a staple here. BA mi sandwiches are aslo common here. It did not disappointed, especially for 8USD.
