New Zealand touristy stuff and Red Stag hunt

Tahr are measured by adding the length and ‘girth at base of horn’ of both horns. I can post an example if that helps.
Thanks. I did the finger stretch from the thumb to the tip of the middle finger on them to see which was bigger and mine was that plus a thumb and his was that plus about a thumb and a half. Using an 8 1/2” x 11” sheet of paper I’m guessing mine was around 10 1/2” and his was 12” long so not sure they are anything great but they both have really nice capes I think.

I asked Braden if he could measure them when he drops them off at the taxidermist. I think we are going to go ahead and have them taxidermied here in New Zealand with someone that has a lot of experience doing the tahrs instead of taking them home and having them done there. Since I’m going to have my stag Euro’d it’s going to take a pretty big crate to ship anyway and the tahrs aren’t going to take up too much room.

Last day in New Zealand today, think we are doing the Christchurch gondola and maybe go punting on the Avon river and maybe check out the botanical gardens.

If youre going to the botanical gardens I'd recommend the river side markets https://riverside.nz/ for causal dining. If you wanted something flash then King of Snake's in very nice - https://www.kingofsnake.co.nz/

A couple of nice beaches near the gondola are Sumner Beach or Taylors Mistake. The Beach Bar at Sumner is a nice spot.
We are staying in Sumner beach.

View from our balcony this morning.

Thanks for the recommendations we will check them out!

Well, just boarded the flight from Christchurch to Auckland on our way home.

It was an incredible 2 weeks here in New Zealand that flew by, sometimes literally!

Just uploaded this clip of Eli returning from his tahr hunt on the helicopter.

Think through if the pilot is flying like this on nice flat ground what it was like flying with him chasing after tahr up in the mountains.

Eli said he thought they actually were flying higher here than when they buzzed some hikers on the way back.

Made it home a couple hours ago. The cooler of frozen meat went through US Customs without even a raised eyebrow. Only question was if it was chicken or birds and we said, nope it is deer. He said that’s fine and sent us on our way.

It was just over 24 hours from boarding in Christchurch to getting home and the meat was still frozen. I put my jacket and some other clothes in there to fill the gap. TSA inspected it somewhere along the way and didn’t do a great job taping it back up, but it held fine.

Lots of stuff to get done around the house before we leave for Montana. Extra busy summer followed by what is going to be an extra busy fall!

Malcolm sure is a character. Definitely the right man to see if you're looking for adventure!

How does it compare to elk?

Not really a fair comparison with just a tenderloin, but I just polled the family and they said comparable to an elk, a little better than your run of the mill whitetail deer. Remember the last elk we’ve eaten was the elk Eli shot and it took almost 24 hours to recover so we haven’t really been over the moon eating on it for the last year and a half. I would say for sure the stag tenderloin was better than a whitetail.

We cooked a couple certified Angus New York strips from the store along with it and although the flavor was a little different, I wouldn’t be able to tell you which I preferred better between the two. It was very tender.

If our freezer wasn’t already nearly full with a big fall ahead, I would be kicking myself for not buying another cooler and bringing more of it home.

If you like oysters, definitely try some in NZ. Best oysters I’ve ever had.

Seaside oysters from the eastern shore of VA are top shelf. That said, I will trust your judgment, lol.

I meant to address this, but don't think I ever did. When we ate at Toast & Oak in Queenstown we had oysters and my wife loves oysters and said that they were the best she has ever eaten. Her description was that they were clean and fresh and didn't have the salty gritty taste that some oysters can have. Even the shells were nice and clean, no barnacles like all the ones I've eaten. I also thought they were the best I've ever eaten but I've maybe eaten 20 or 30 oysters in my life, my wife loves oysters and has eaten hundreds of them so she is probably a much better judge than I would be.

The last night we were there we ate at King of Snake in Christchurch and my wife had a single oyster there for an appetizer and she swears it was even better than the ones in Queenstown which were the best ones she had ever had.

So thanks for the recommendation on trying the oysters, I probably wouldn't have been so adamant to have us try some if you hadn't posted!

We take our oysters very seriously here in NZ, episically down south where they have a wild oyster harvested from the straight between Bluff (a small port town) and the South Island. In May this year My wife and I actually drove down from Queenstown to Bluff with the main purpose of trying the oysters at Bluff where they are landed.

Glad you made it to the king of snake. I hope you enjoyed it, my sister and I had a meal there and loved it.

Game changing! Glad you (and especially your wife) got to experience them. I agree with her assessment. Both the flavor and texture are so different than any other oysters I’ve had. “Slimy” doesn’t even cross your mind when eating them.
