Thirty years ago today, four elk hunters from Northwest Montana; a logger, a preacher, a salesman, and a small business owner, hatched what would become one of the greatest conservation stories of our day. It was on this day in 1984, in Troy, Montana that the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation was formed.

Thanks to those great guys, two of whom are still serving on the Board of Directors and continuing as ambassadors for elk and other wildlife, elk hunters have a loud voice to advocate what is best for elk and other wildlife, their habitat, and our hunting heritage.
Thirty years of growth, 7,000,000 acres of conserved habitat, and 700,000 acres of new public access are in the rear view mirror. I am sure those four elk hunters in Troy, Montana could have never dreamed of the remarkable conservation organization they would set in motion.
What lies ahead are even greater challenges. Fortunately for elk, an organization of 203,000 members and 10,000 volunteers, mostly elk hunters, stands ready to do the work that will make the landscape better and the future brighter for elk and elk hunters.
