I was recently given my father-in-laws old shot shell press with some old shot, greendot(?) powder and plastic wads. I'm sure the shot and wads are fine but how long can old powder still be considered viable? It has been stored in a temperature controlled (mostly) shop. I know I have a ton of learnin' to do and look forward to the exploration. If the powder is bad, how do I dispose of it properly? The eternal teenager that resides in my brain knows what to do with it, lol.

Sniff test. If it smells like ether, it's probably fine. If it smells stale, go sprinkle it on the lawn. It's good fertilizer.

If you are in any doubt, what-so-ever, about the type of powder or it's efficacy, just dump it and purchase new. Powder is everywhere now and it's a lot cheaper than blowing up a gun because you loaded the wrong powder.
