Gun Porn Wednesday

I didn't realize how much I would like the cartridge - found the rifle at an auction in Hamilton 3 years ago. I haven't shot anything with it yet, but it's fun to carry. I've been using it as a pack-out carry gun.

Have you shot that Alex Henry BPE? That is one awesome piece. I love the detail on the barrel.

I've got a few loads that I'm working for. It's pretty close to your 444 in terms of velocity and energy. I'm not hot-rodding it all though. It'll be with me for whitetail this year. That's for sure. Right now I'm getting about 2000 fps w/ a 240 grain hardcast, gaschecked bullet & 34.2 grains of H4198. Regulates well with no crossover at 100 yards. Stacks 'em right next to each other from 25-50 yards.

Barrels are Damascus so I'm pretty conservative with it. :)

Ok, spent the morning on the range with my brother, my cousin, and their 3 boys. Good time had by all.

Quote of the day from my 8 year old nephew, as we were walking out to pin my 300 yard target up, "Can your bullet even make it this far?"

Boys on the range:

My hundred yard target, took about 5 shots to get my first 3 shot group 2" high in the diamond, then the last four were right on. 168 Berger VLD, Gunwerks custom ammo:

My three shots at 300 yards, about a 6" group. I'm going back next week, and will shoot another 10 or so at 300. I was missing all the fun with the kids and their .22's:

I didn't think you could shoot smokeless through the Damascus - as long as you keep the pressures low it's safe? Weren't those originally loaded with cordite?

You have to be pretty careful to keep pressures where they need to be but you can use smokeless. The original loadings were all black powder but in the 1890's, with the Advent of smokeless powder and decline in black, companies starting developing the cordite loads (which has a good pressure spike IIRC) as a replacement load for the black powder ones. Modern smokeless is used on a basic formula of 40-45% of the original loadings and often combined with some kind of case filler like cotton or dacron to ensure proper ignition. Graeme Wright's book Shooting the British Double Rifle has a lot of information on how to load Nitro for Black.

Ruger American Compact .308
Weaver k6
Burris Zee low rings

480 dollars and 6.8 pounds as it sits.

Feels like a kid's toy, but if it shoots like they're supposed to I'm going to have a hard time complaining.

Okay, you guys got me all jacked up with these guns!!! Here is the gun that I put together this year. It is a Savage action with a Shilen barrel in a 6.5-284. Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50. I did all the work, headspacing, bedding, putting together. It shoots .6 groups with 127 gr Barnes LRX, 3.5" groups at 650 yards.

tarheel, your buddy is gonna love that Allen Magnum. I don't have one, but was fortunate enough to shoot several of his rifles a few years back. Pretty awesome. 1700 yards is just getting warmed up! mtmuley

444 Marlin

I have had one of these since 1993. Have shot the Hornady 300 XTP with good results. You do need to keep an eye on your velocities as this bullet was designed as a handgun bullet, but it will perform well for you.
If you are going to use cast bullets with the micro-groove, I found that if you oversize them abt .002 (depending the brand of mold you use) they shoot well w/o too much of a leading problem. I cant recall the exact load data at this moment but will look it up and post it later. Hope this helps some.
I did take it on an elk hunt a few yrs ago but only as a backup, so cant tell you much there. Good luck with yours.

So these Ruger American's can shoot??? One in 308win is tempting me..

Pulled the peep last night, and put this bad boy back together. Bears beware...

Picture was from about 6-7 years ago, taken in the swamp on the Eastern Shore of MD. I think a decent deer may have been living in the area.

Not nearly as impressive as some others in here but here are a few from my very small collection.

Custom built 308 on 98 Mauser action

I just traded for this Ruger No. 1 in 270 a few weeks ago haven't even had a chance to shoot it. (Traded a NEF heavy barrel .223 with factory fit 500 S&W and stainless 50 cal. muzzleloader barrels. I gave $500 for the set 3 years ago)

And this is my bone stock Ruger SR1911 but I love it!
