Man arrested in deer poaching incident
A Dunsmuir man was cited on suspicion of poaching and marijuana possession after he was accused of shooting a deer while on a bike ride.
Rodney Gene Clark, 45, was cited Sunday on suspicion of having less than an ounce of marijuana and violating state Department of Fish and Game codes. The buck was killed on private property on North Old Stage Road near Weed, Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Susan Gravenkamp said Wednesday.
Clark had been riding his bike on North Old Stage Road when he spotted the deer, stopped and shot it with the .308 rifle he was carrying, she said.
The owner of the property, John Cosner, heard the gunshot about 1:45 p.m., got out his pistol and went to investigate, Gravenkamp said. He came across Clark and his fresh kill and told him he was under arrest, she said. A neighbor called 911 while Cosner had Clark lie on the ground and wait for deputies, Gravenkamp said. In checking Clark for weapons, she said, deputies found a baggie of pot and a pipe.
Clark was cited and released, Gravenkamp said.
Kind of ironic that he was on a bike ride near the town of "Weed"
