Gas prices affecting your hunting plans?

Will the price of gas affect the amount of hunting you do this fall?

I will be thinking hard about making 4 trips to Upper state NY for Salmon Tournaments this season. I am lucky that all my deer hunting is with in 20 drive from my shop.

gas prices

I have always hunted alone and hunted often. I will still hunt often, but I may be looking for a partner here if things keep this up, especially when it comes to running my hounds for cats and bears. My hunting plans will not change, however some of my spending habits will.

Price of gas won't change anything for me, i'll just have to cut down on my trips to Garcias (local watering hole) and eat a lot more at home. Having a wife that will split hunting costs with me on our sheep hunt will make a big difference too.

The $4.30 a gallon for regular unleaded wouldn't matter much to me. It's the $4.10 for heating fuel that's killing everyone here (no natural gas). My 6 week bill from April to mid May was $849 or about $141 a week. The thermostat is set on 65 and our house is only 1700 sq feet.

Why use heating fuel over a wood burning fireplace?

I will cut back on gas usage in other areas and eat out less so I can hunt when and what I want to. Its cheaper to spend the gas to hunt then to buy beef.

No changes here, but some other expenses earlier in the year did keep me from putting in for as many tags this year as in the past. So, that is currently my limiting factor. But, I think I'd cut corners other ways than to cut out trips. I do like the idea of fewer, longer trips...

For me I will likely skip the scouting trips and plan longer week-long hunts rather than weekend hunts. I will try to go a couple days before the season opens in order to get a little scouting in just prior to the opener. Also I will have to plan ahead a little more and take a partner along rather than going by myself. Just having somebody to split the gas bill with will make a huge difference.

Because, everyone is supplementing with wood so the drift wood is scarce. Most of the land on the roadsystem is native owned and the only real area we are "allowed" to cut wood is 40 miles out of town in an old clear cut area. I cut my own when I'm out there duck hunting but don't make special trips because of the 85 mile round trip.
Were at $4.35 for regular unleaded now.
