What prompted you to start digging there?

A couple of large vertebra had weathered out of the creek bank. I found a third vertebra exposed in the cut so I decided to do a little more digging. I honestly didnt think id find anything, but ive heard stories of people finding bison skulls in coulees in eastern Montana. I just humored my curious side.

That is a cool find ismith...........I have found three in my time in the field. One of them was at around 10,000 feet elevation..........was litterally about 300 yards lower than a group of mountain goats we were watching............wish i would have kept it:)

I found one in nearly the same type of scenerio..... I was fishing a small river in eastern MT and saw a couple teeth stick out of a sluffed off bank. A little digging and I had a skull that was very similar in size and quality to the one above. I gave it to my uncle to display in his front yard where he has an old homesteaders wagon (or whats left of one) as part of the decoration. That was about 20 years ago though and he no longer has it..... pretty sure it was lost when the house went up in smoke. I don't think it burned but it must have gotten destroyed or disposed of during the firefighting / clean up efforts.
