We had a covey 7-8 years ago but I haven’t seen any since. I heard a grouse last week too!Only place I've ever seen then is southern Il. Pretty cool!
I know the feeling! I’ve had turkeys, grouse and pheasant bust out from under my foot.Big ice storm in '09 really helped our quail (and rabbit) population.
Still not how it used to be, but at least there is improvement!
I've dang near soiled myself accidently jumping a covey while deer hunting
Last year I had a fairly large Jake jump out from a dead log at 5 yards. Thought I was bout to wrassle a bobcatI know the feeling! I’ve had turkeys, grouse and pheasant bust out from under my foot.
My 12 year old son (10 years ago!) almost fell over from a sage grouse jumping up in his face.I know the feeling! I’ve had turkeys, grouse and pheasant bust out from under my foot.
I'd pay money to watch that match.Last year I had a fairly large Jake jump out from a dead log at 5 yards. Thought I was bout to wrassle a bobcat
much more common south of I-80. Our pheasants are doing ok, we have a few hungarian partridge, and a few grouse where there is habitat. Predator control is an issue and we need more people trapping/hunting the predators of ground nesting birds. We saw them fairly often when I was growing up in SW Iowa. Every spring, there would be at least a couple males calling somewhere around the edge of the barnyard. Super neat to hide and whistle “bob-white!” back at them. They’ll come looking for you.
Id probably have to sit right on the log and clean my shorts!Last year I had a fairly large Jake jump out from a dead log at 5 yards. Thought I was bout to wrassle a bobcat
Yeah, huns and grouse don’t exist where I’m from. Even turkeys were spotty until about 20 years ago. It was a big deal the first time I saw turks in my parents timber. From what I hear, the raccoons etc have done a lot of damage to bird survival there recently too. It’s a shame because the Turkey hunting was phenomenal for several years after they got established.much more common south of I-80.
