Hey all. This was my first time hunting bears after moving to Montana in early 2019. My friend and I hunted pretty hard and tagged out. His was an early season surprise bear that we walked up on at 75 yds.

Mine was after hunting a new spot. First time there was figuring out the landscape but no bears. Second trip there we spotted a beautiful color phase bear from a mile away but once we got within range couldn’t relocate it. I knew I would hunt that bear the rest of the season. We made a plan to head back to the same sport a week later after I returned from a Minnesota fishing trip. Our plan came together exactly as we planned. Got up to the ridge where I knew I’d have a 375 yd shot if it was back in the same spot, or a 250 yd. shot if it was on a closer hillside. Sure enough just 15 minutes after first light, it was on the closer hillside. And it was clearly the same bear. made a good shot on it but was quartering toward me so didn’t go down right away.No blood trail at all and she ran into the timber right away. Friend walked up on it at 15 ft.away and she ran 40 ft. Up a tree. He shouted for me and I ran over just in time to see her falling out of the tree. She was still alive but could only lift her head at the time so I placed a finishing shot.
Amazing experience with a great story to go along with it.

Pretty bear!

Get the story on the ear tag yet? Was it a trap and release?
Yeah the game warden pulled the report for me. Relocated because she was scaring an old lady by eating from her apple tree. 7 year old bear.

A trophy and you helped a little old lady, that's a rare double header. Congrats on a well earned punched tag.

Very cool. I chased an ear-tagged bear before it got in my garage which contained freshly killed elk meat. I lived 25 miles from the nearest forest too! I didn't get the op to find out the story since I only yelled at it, my bear season had ended two weeks earlier...
