First bear

Did the meat at least taste ok?
Only way to describe the taste is describe the smell once it started cooking. Smelled just fine during butchering in the field and hat home. Smelled fine when being unthawed. Once it started cooking it was like that dead mouse smell after a few days of searching for it but intensified. The taste was not far off of that. Had 2 other buddies shoot bear off this same site and there bear meat was rancid as well. We believe now that these bears were probably feeding on a dead bovine bull a few hundred yards away down a canyon that had been rotting away.

.....gross and unfortunate.
Sorry about that meat. Nice bear though!

Ive been told a bear will smell and taste like its last meal
Ive taken a few here in Pa some were eating acorns and corn they were fine
others must have liked getting into trash or something they were bad smelling
And thats a fine bear

Thank you. I’ve made the mistake of shooting hogs after they were feeding on dead critters. They too had rancid meat. I should have know better that a bear would be similar.
