Fear of Lost Keys

Two is one, one is none? Is that how the saying goes? I am a big fan of three, yep, three truck keys. Not getting home after a hunt won't be due to a lost key....that's my OCD kicking in I guess.

The key for me is using the same spot every time. They go in my back packs “critical pocket” along with my wallet and licenses. I only open it at the truck, after a kill, and when absolutely necessary. Putting one in a snack pocket is asking for trouble. I have never carried an extra, but I feel I should.

Today when I headed out turkey hunting it reminded me that I have an Apple AirTag on my keys! Pretty slick.

I have a pile of them so the man can track all my shiz; wallet, keys, bino case (I had one stolen), and my mountain bike (had one of those stolen too).

For my hunting pants that don't have zippered pockets, I sewed a small key ring into the bottom of a pocket. My keychain has a small carabiner that I clip to the ring.

I have a spare key hidden in a key magnet designed for vehicles. It's on my frame

I have a small carabiner on my keys. There’s a loop in the top of my pack that I can hook it to. If I’m just carrying my chest rig there’s a zippered pocket and the keys will be the only thing in it.

County park, sunny day in December with family. I dragged a picnic table to the middle of a frozen lake for lunch, beers, and ice fishing. It got warm enough to take off my coat and I set it on the table.

Later a gust of wind blew my coat off the table and pitched my key ring out of my pocket into one of the holes in the ice.

If you’re like me you’d leave em dangling in the ignition…. Always been hanging right where I left them when I got back! 🤣

I always lock mine up and carry the keys with me. Once a rancher was pretty pissed cuz he had to walk 4 miles due to my truck being parked on the single lane dirt track I hadn't seen anybody on weeks. There were no pull-offs or parking spots. I used to open locked vehicles as a sideline. Seen some silly stuff. People break all four door handles and then ask you to get in their car. Many keypad vehicles with dead batteries. People save their last AAA car until its -20 in February and then want you to make keys in a blizzard. Had a few a window was down on. A group of 12 teenagers got locked out of their van, I pushed the vent window open as it wasn't locked. To see the expression on their faces as they hadn't figured out to try it was priceless. As more and more vehicles utilize FOBS, people never use the key until that one day when they find out the mechanical lock is so gummed up, it will not work. Use them once a year and lubricate them.

Was antelope hunting with my dad. Had a different pair of pants than normal. Dad rushed me into short cutting the process to leave the truck and get on with the hunt.

Lo and behold, the keys didn’t get zipped in anywhere, my OnX track didn’t start, and the keys fell out of the new pair of pants during a stalk. Never found them.

But did get two antelope and got a friend to drive a spare key out to me, so that worked out- it was just pretty dicey for a hot minute there. Dad now understands that the process of leaving the truck is sacred, and not to be rushed.
