Absolutely true. All any bear has to do is stand on it's hind legs for a better look and it is assumed to be charging. Sportsman/hunters lose opportunities to hunt bear legally during hunting seasons because of these losses.

I didn't realize we were losing opportunities to hunt bears because of self defense losses.

As a non res Englishman my first visit to Montana my hunting partner was shit scared of encountering any bear, we visited the warden in Dillon, after our conversation he accepted we had done research and were bear aware to the best of our limited experience, I was using a 30-06 180 grain nosler partition for Elk, and we had bear spray, he said spray then handgun, which was difficult as we weren't permitted to carry a handgun!
I'm afraid it got to my friend, he didn't join me when I went off with my pup tent into the mountains, in fact the only time I saw Elk was without him, but I did see lots of bear sign!

This seems like a silly argument but I'm bored. From my experience and from research any rifle and any bullet will stop a bear it will happen fast and be close. Even a 55 grn round from a 223 at 10 feet will kill a bear graveyard dead I've seen it. The odds of a committed bear at close range blowing right through your bear spray and giving you a world class ass whoopin are probably triple of you turning it away. Honestly the odds of anybody drawing a pistol and getting off more than 1 accurate shot in a bad bear encounter are not great either. I've lived, worked, hunted, and fished in bear country my whole life pay attention take care of yourself and the others with you give yourself a chance to avoid getting jumped by a bear and you'll do way better. In the nature of this dead horse carry what you feel safest with and practice and know how to use them. Enjoy your time in the outdoors pay attention and don't worry about the bear their out there and don't want to see you either.

I hunt/camp where Gbears hunt.... I have never once thought about which bullet would be best for elk and Gbear defense. Pics from last weekend, I didn't bring my elk rifle for bear defense....... I get it guys come out west and think they are going to get eaten and I can imagine that there are a lot of scenarios that play out in anticipation of coming out here. Short shotgun with some buck shot will always be a good self defense apparatus against 4 or 2 legged wrong doers....not practical for hunting trips but a dependable 10mm might ease your mind. I bet most people would not be very effective with a pistol. Good luck not becoming bear poop.

Bear spray/sidearm will be much better. In the heat of the moment a scoped bolt action rifle seems like a problem. Get some good super penetrates from underwood for your sidearm and leave the hollow points at home.

I carry both spray and a 10mm — each has a purpose when the other doesn’t. When I’m shoulders‑deep breaking down my bull, my girlfriend will be right next to me with a 12‑gauge defensive shotgun loaded with buckshot and slugs.

We shoot pistols all the time and she’s solid with one, but in that moment the shotgun just makes more sense. Almost anyone can put all five rounds into a bear at close range with a 12‑gauge, and that’s usually enough to slow things down.
